Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Publishes 'Pilgrimage to Spain,' Illuminating Hidden Spiritual Pilgrimage Routes

The Knowledge Publishing Contents Institute of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) published 'Pilgrimage to Spain: In Search of St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross' on May 26. This book introduces pilgrimage routes steeped in Spain's deep Catholic history and spirituality, distinct from the well-known Camino de Santiago, offering readers a new perspective on cultural heritage exploration.

The Sixth Journey in the 'World Cultural Heritage Exploration Series'

'Pilgrimage to Spain' is the sixth book in HUFS Knowledge Publishing Contents Institute's 'World Cultural Heritage Exploration Series,' which aims for experiential humanities content. An official from the Contents Institute stated, "We planned this series to convey experiential humanities content that can be directly seen, felt, and walked, rather than cultural heritage as mere knowledge." They added that they hope this book will serve as a guide for proper world cultural heritage travel, in contrast to the uncritical consumption of overseas travel by the public. This differentiates the book from existing travel guides, as it aims for in-depth cultural understanding and reflection beyond simple tourism.

Spain's Spiritual Heart Beyond Santiago

Professor Jeon Yong-gap of HUFS's Department of Spanish Translation and Interpretation, the author, explains, "When people make a pilgrimage to Spain, most head to Santiago de Compostela, but there's a different path that holds the deep history and spirituality of Spanish Catholicism." While the Camino de Santiago is a universal pilgrimage to find the relics of Saint James, the pilgrimage routes covered in this book follow the footsteps of St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross, key figures in the Spanish Reformation. These two saints were important figures who reformed the 16th-century Spanish Catholic Church and led a spiritual movement.

St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross: Two Pillars of Spanish Spirituality

St. Teresa of Jesus (Teresa de Jesús, 1515-1582) was a mystic and Doctor of the Church who spearheaded the reform of the Carmelite Order and founded the Discalced Carmelite Order. She engaged in extensive writing based on profound spiritual experiences, and through her works like 'The Autobiography,' 'The Way of Perfection,' and 'The Interior Castle,' she profoundly influenced Spanish Catholic spirituality. Her spiritual journey, in particular, emphasized inner growth, seeking union with God through prayer and contemplation.

St. John of the Cross (Juan de la Cruz, 1542-1591) was a key figure who, along with St. Teresa, led the reform of the Discalced Carmelite Order. Based on deep mystical experiences, he likened the spiritual journey to an 'obscure night,' poetically expressing the process of soul purification and union with God. His writings, including 'The Dark Night,' 'The Spiritual Canticle,' and 'The Living Flame of Love,' are regarded as the literary essence of the Spanish Golden Age and the pinnacle of spiritual literature.

These two saints were not merely religious figures but exerted immense influence across Spanish culture, art, and thought. This book traces their faith and life trajectories, illuminating the state of Spanish Catholicism and the historical context of the time through the sacred sites where they lived.

A Sacred Journey: Ávila, Alba de Tormes, and Beyond

The book deeply explores the main sacred sites related to the lives of St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross. Representative pilgrimage destinations include Ávila and Alba de Tormes.

Ávila is the city where St. Teresa was born and grew up, and where she took her first steps in reforming the Carmelite Order. The walls of Ávila, a UNESCO World Heritage site, symbolize the strong faith of medieval Spain, and traces of St. Teresa are deeply embedded throughout the city. The Convent of St. Teresa, where her birthplace was located, and the Convent of St. Joseph, where the first Discalced Carmelite convent was established, offer spiritual depth to pilgrims.

Alba de Tormes is where St. Teresa passed away and her remains are enshrined. The church of the Discalced Carmelite Order, where her relics are interred, holds significant meaning for pilgrims, and countless individuals seek spiritual solace in the space where her last breath was taken.

In addition, the book elaborately introduces several cities in the Castilla region related to the lives of these saints. For example, the Carmelite monastery in Segovia, where St. John was active, and the historical sites in Toledo, where he briefly resided, play an important role in understanding the historical context and cultural background of Spanish Catholicism. These regions are not merely geographical spaces but sacred places imbued with the saints' spiritual significance and historical events, offering deep emotion to pilgrims.

Beyond Simple Travel: Spiritual Reflection and Humanistic Depth

This book is not merely a travel guidebook listing famous Spanish attractions. It broadly and deeply covers the religious significance, historical context, and cultural background embedded in each pilgrimage site, helping readers experience experiential humanities beyond mere tourism. The author, drawing on rich historical knowledge and humanistic insight, reinterprets the lives and spirituality of the saints from a modern perspective, guiding readers to reflect on the direction of their own spiritual lives.

The HUFS Knowledge Publishing Contents Institute particularly emphasizes that this book will be of great help to those planning group pilgrimages or contemplating the direction of their spiritual lives. Through this book, readers can walk Spain's hidden spiritual pilgrimage routes, reflect on the essence of faith and the meaning of life, and experience profound inner growth. This can be seen as a meaningful endeavor that serves as a 'guide for proper world cultural heritage travel' in a modern society saturated with indiscriminate overseas travel consumption, providing readers with both cultural knowledge and spiritual richness.
