UIJEONGBU, South Korea – The Korean women's curling team delivered a spectacular performance, defeating their arch-rivals, Japan, in an electrifying extra-end clash at the 2025 LGT World Women's Curling Championship. This victory marks a significant milestone as Korea hosts the prestigious event for the first time in 16 years, since the 2009 Gangneung tournament.
The Korean team, led by skip Kim Eun-ji, third Kim Min-ji, second Kim Su-ji, lead Seol Ye-eun, and fifth Seol Ye-ji, showcased exceptional skill and resilience throughout the intense match held at Uijeongbu Indoor Ice Rink.
The game was a nail-biting affair, with both teams exchanging leads and demonstrating remarkable precision. Korea initially surged ahead with a four-point score in the second end, but Japan quickly retaliated, narrowing the gap. The tension escalated as the match progressed, culminating in an 8-8 tie at the end of the regulation 10 ends.
In the decisive extra end, Korea, holding the hammer, capitalized on their advantage. A clutch takeout shot by skip Kim Eun-ji secured two crucial points, sealing a 10-8 victory and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
This win is particularly significant as the championship serves as a crucial qualifier for the 2026 Milano Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics. With the top eight nations earning Olympic berths, Korea's strong start is a promising sign.
The opening ceremony was graced by Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon, who delivered a congratulatory address, and Korean Sport & Olympic Committee Chairman Yoo Seung-min, who performed the ceremonial first pitch. Both dignitaries were present to witness the thrilling match and offer their support to the Korean team.
