NEW YORK – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on all parties involved in the Middle East conflict to respect the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, following a sharp escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran.

In a statement released on Monday by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General emphasized that "all parties concerned must respect freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law."

The appeal comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent order to implement a maritime blockade against Iran. This move was a direct response to Iran’s attempts to close the strategic waterway after the breakdown of peace talks held in Islamabad, Pakistan, on April 11–12.

Secretary-General Guterres also highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, noting that approximately 20,000 seafarers are currently caught in the crossfire. He reminded the international community that these individuals are "stranded on ships and facing increasing hardships every day."

Despite the recent failure of the end-of-war negotiations, Guterres offered a glimmer of hope, describing the fact that discussions took place as a "positive and meaningful step toward resuming dialogue." He noted that the willingness to meet showed a serious commitment to engagement from both sides.

"The ceasefire must be maintained, and all violations must stop," the Secretary-General added, urging both nations to return to the negotiating table to reach a lasting agreement.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most vital oil transit chokepoints, and any prolonged disruption could have significant implications for global energy security and international trade.
