FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The Argentine maestro, Lionel Messi, cemented yet another record in his monumental career, officially becoming the most prolific goal-creator in the history of football. By logging a crucial assist in Inter Miami’s dominant 5-1 victory over New York City FC in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference Final, the 38-year-old superstar surpassed Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás to claim the all-time career assist record.

The historic assist, which brings Messi’s career total to 405 across all club and international competitions, came in the 67th minute of the Conference Final on November 30. The win secured Inter Miami's first-ever MLS Cup Final appearance since the club’s founding in 2020, adding a conference championship trophy to their rapidly growing collection.

The decisive play occurred with the score at 2-1. Under tight defensive pressure, Messi received a pass from his left, feigned a turning shot, and then, with trademark vision and timing, threaded a subtle but perfect pass to a waiting Mateo Silvetti in front of the goal. Silvetti made no mistake, pushing the score to 3-1 and effectively breaking New York City FC’s resistance. The Argentine connection was strong throughout the match, with compatriot Tadeo Allende netting a spectacular hat-trick to lead the scoring.

Messi's latest milestone places him atop an elite list of footballing legends. His 405 career assists eclipses the 404 recorded by Ferenc Puskás and the 369 registered by Brazilian icon Pelé. This achievement reinforces the narrative that Messi is not just one of the greatest goalscorers in history—boasting an incredible career tally of 896 goals in 1,136 games—but also the sport's most unselfish and influential playmaker.

His ability to both score and create has defined his 2025 season, making him the world's most productive player in terms of goal contributions this calendar year. His combined output of 72 offensive points (46 goals and 26 assists) is unmatched globally, proving that even at 38, his impact remains unparalleled.

Inter Miami's momentous victory propels them to the 2025 MLS Cup Final, where they will face the Western Conference champions, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, on December 7. The Canadian side, spearheaded by German football legend Thomas Müller, defeated San Diego FC 3-1 to book their spot in the final, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown between two global icons in the culmination of the MLS season.

The record-breaking assist further burnishes Messi's legacy, establishing him as the ultimate architect of goals and confirming his status as the most complete attacking player the game has ever seen.
