Busan has taken another meaningful step toward creating a truly inclusive travel destination. The Busan Tourism Organization (BTO, CEO Lee Jung-sil) recently announced that it successfully hosted a special marine leisure initiative utilizing specialized beach wheelchairs at Songdo Beach. This program aims to break down physical barriers in coastal tourism, ensuring that individuals with mobility impairments, elderly visitors, and people with disabilities can experience the joy of the ocean without limitations.

Expanding Access through Barrier-Free Tourism

For individuals using regular wheelchairs, visiting a sandy beach has historically presented nearly insurmountable physical barriers. Soft sand traps standard wheels, and the shoreline remains entirely out of reach. To address this issue, the Busan Tourism Organization organized a specialized barrier-free program at Songdo Beach, featuring specially designed beach wheelchairs equipped with large, balloon-like pneumatic tires. These wide tires distribute weight evenly, allowing the chairs to glide smoothly over sand and even float safely in shallow waters.

During the program, participating tourists with mobility challenges and their accompanying family members or guardians were able to stroll along the pristine white sandy shores of Songdo Beach and safely enter the refreshing sea water. For many participants, feeling the ocean breeze and touching the waves directly was a rare, long-awaited experience made possible by the thoughtfully designed barrier-free infrastructure and dedicated on-site assistance.

Songdo Beach: A Model for Accessible Coastal Tourism

Songdo Beach was strategically chosen for this initiative due to its ongoing development as an inclusive, barrier-free travel destination. The beach features gentle slopes at its entry points, making movement from the promenade to the sand significantly easier. Furthermore, nearby attractions such as the Songdo Skywalk—Korea's longest curved ocean overpass—and accessible coastal trails are designed with convenience features that accommodate diverse visitors. By pairing these permanent infrastructure features with temporary specialized equipment like beach wheelchairs, Busan continues to set a high standard for accessible marine tourism in South Korea. 

Corporate Social Responsibility and Inclusive Public Service

What made this year's program particularly impactful was the active participation of the Busan Tourism Organization's internal staff. Rather than relying solely on external event organizers, BTO employees volunteered directly on-site, guiding participants, assisting with equipment operations, and ensuring safety throughout the beach stroll and water immersion activities.

This hands-on approach reflects a growing commitment among public institutions in South Korea to integrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) directly into their core competencies. By leveraging their expertise in tourism promotion and management, BTO staff members actively practiced "inclusive tourism," ensuring that public tourism resources are shared equitably by every member of society, regardless of physical ability.
