A ‘Prelude’ to the 2027 World Strawberry Industry Expo… Evolving into a Convergence Festival Integrating Smart Agriculture and Defense Industries

A feast of strawberries, the herald of spring, begins its grand opening in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province. The city of Nonsan announced that it will host the ‘28th Nonsan Strawberry Festival’ for four days, from March 26th to 29th, in the vicinity of the Nonsan Citizen Family Park. This year’s festival is expected to serve as a critical testbed to gauge the potential success of the upcoming ‘2027 Nonsan World Strawberry Industry Expo,’ moving beyond a simple promotion of local specialties.

Painting the ‘Future of the Strawberry Industry’ with Smart Farm Technology
The central theme of this year's festival is undoubtedly the ‘Expo Preview.’ The newly established ‘Nonsan Strawberry Theme Pavilion’ visualizes the present and future of smart farming, where AI and ICT are integrated beyond traditional cultivation methods. This exhibition space, which consolidates advanced agricultural technology, suggests to visitors that Nonsan strawberries are leaping forward into a high-value future industry.

The expansion of its global outreach is also noteworthy. The ‘Nonsan Strawberry Global Parade,’ which received high acclaim last year, has increased in scale. Furthermore, through the international art project ‘Alchemist N.A’ and the Global Festival Zone, the festival has solidified its prestige as an international event. Dynamic programs such as the ‘K-pop Random Play Dance’ aimed at the MZ generation are also expected to add vitality to the festivities.

Catching Two Birds with One Stone: ‘Gourmet’ and ‘Safety’
The focus on ‘taste,’ the essence of the festival, has become even more sophisticated. Visitors can look forward to diverse gastronomic experiences, including strawberry harvesting and unique menus such as strawberry bibimbap and strawberry hotteok (sweet pancakes). In particular, an outdoor terrace-style food zone has been created this year, providing a pleasant environment where guests can enjoy performances and food simultaneously.

City authorities are also putting full effort into quality control for a ‘trusted festival.’ To ensure safety, inspections for 463 types of residual pesticides are conducted before and during the festival. Additionally, the city plans to enhance the credibility of Nonsan strawberries by implementing a public contest for vendors and a mandatory price marking system to eradicate overcharging and provide premium strawberries at reasonable prices.

From Helicopter Rides to Drone Soccer… Infusing the Colors of ‘K-Defense’
Content utilizing Nonsan’s unique defense infrastructure is another differentiating factor. The Army Aviation helicopter riding experience has established itself as the most popular program, with reservations selling out as soon as they opened. Along with this, the KoRex Defense Industry Exhibition and displays of aviation equipment present the identity of ‘Nonsan, the K-Defense City’ at the forefront of the festival, providing a unique spectacle for families.

A Leap Toward the Expo: Evolving into a Convergence Platform
Nonsan City has significantly improved overall operations, such as systematically zoning the venue and introducing a numbering system for visitor convenience. This is intended to inspect the administrative capacity to accommodate large crowds ahead of the 2027 World Strawberry Industry Expo.

Nonsan Mayor Baek Seong-hyeon stated, “This festival will be an important turning point in promoting the industrial value and cultural capabilities of Nonsan strawberries to the world.” He added, “Through Nonsan's unique convergence platform—where agriculture, tourism, and the defense industry harmonize—we will capture the tastes and hearts of people worldwide.”

The Nonsan Strawberry Festival offers a vision of future industry beyond mere sweetness. This spring, Nonsan is once again preparing to soar as the center of the global strawberry industry beyond Korea.
