Europe Injects €800B into Security: K-Defense Emerges as the Strategic Partner of Choice

DÜSSELDORF, Germany – As the European Union (EU) accelerates its massive €800 billion (approx. $860 billion) security investment, South Korea is positioning itself as a vital strategic partner, moving beyond simple hardware exports to high-tech defense collaboration.

On March 25 (local time), the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) hosted "2026 K-Defense Day" in Düsseldorf, Germany. The event aimed to build on recent export successes in Eastern and Northern Europe to establish a firmer foothold across the entire continent.

A Surge in European Defense Spending

The geopolitical landscape has triggered a dramatic spike in European defense budgets. In 2025, EU defense spending hit €381 billion—a 63% increase from 2020. Under the "2030 Readiness" roadmap, the EU Commission is pushing for an additional €800 billion in investment. Germany, in particular, has earmarked €108 billion for its 2026 defense budget, a more than 25% year-on-year increase.

From Hardware to R&D Collaboration

KOTRA’s strategy for the European market has evolved. The focus is now on deep industrial integration, including:

Joint Research & Development (R&D) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems.
Technology commercialization within the drone and unmanned vehicle sectors.
Strategic partnerships with global anchor companies such as Airbus.
During the event, which was held in conjunction with the European drone exhibition "Xponential," 11 promising Korean firms engaged in one-on-one B2B consultations with 30 major European defense contractors.

A Trusted Security Pillar

"K-Defense is now being recognized as a core security partner that Europe can trust," said Kang Kyung-sung, President of KOTRA. "We will actively support our companies to create strategic synergies with local European firms, helping them leap forward as a central axis of the global security partnership."

As Korean companies like Alux continue to push the boundaries of AI-driven autonomous flight, the synergy between Korea’s rapid tech deployment and Europe’s vast investment is expected to redefine the regional defense landscape.
