VN-Index Surges Past 1,700 Mark, Boosted by Vingroup's Rally

On October 21, 2026, the Vietnamese stock market recorded a strong upward trend, with the benchmark VN-Index effortlessly breaking through the 1,700 mark, driven by a surge in Vingroup-related stocks. At the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE), the VN-Index closed at 1,738.67 points, surging 46.7 points (2.76%) compared to the previous trading session. This marks the strongest daily gain in terms of point increase over the past six months.

The core driving force behind the market's rally was undoubtedly the large-cap stocks within the Vingroup conglomerate. Major affiliates such as Vingroup (VIC), Vinhomes (VHM), and Vincom Retail (VRE) all hit their daily ceiling limits, boosting overall market sentiment. In particular, VIC single-handedly lifted the VN-Index by 23.37 points, while VHM contributed 6.78 points, playing a leading role in the index's surge. The stock price of Vingroup—famous for developing Ho Chi Minh City's Landmark 81 building—jumped 7% in a single day, taking center stage in the bull market.

As buying momentum spread across the broader real estate sector, other major construction and property development companies also showed sharp gains. Dat Xanh Group (DXG) rose 6.94%, Nam Long Group (NLG) 6.78%, Phat Dat Real Estate Development (PDR) 5.73%, VPI 5.46%, C.E.O Group (CEO) 5.45%, and Khang Dien House (KDH) 4.95%, alongside other major stocks moving upward together.

In addition, financial stocks such as banking and securities solidly underpinned the market recovery. In the banking sector, TPBank (TPB) climbed 5.42%, LPBank (LPB) 4.89%, VietinBank (CTG) 4.16%, Maritime Bank (MSB) 3.67%, VIB 2.55%, and SHB 2.37%, tracing upward trajectories.

The overall market atmosphere was also very positive. Advancing stocks outnumbered declining stocks by more than three to one, and trading value increased from the previous session, exceeding 20.2 trillion VND (approximately $784 million). The VN30-Index, which tracks the 30 largest stocks, also soared 35.06 points (1.9%) to 1,880.57 points. Out of the 30 stocks included in the VN30 basket, 25 advanced, only 1 declined, and 4 remained unchanged. Furthermore, the HNX-Index on the Hanoi Stock Exchange rose 3.71 points (1.44%) to 261.67 points.

Notably, foreign investors ended their 20-session consecutive net-selling streak on the Ho Chi Minh City market, turning back to net buyers. Foreign investors net-bought approximately 193 billion VND worth of shares on the HoSE, contributing to an improvement in market liquidity and supply-demand dynamics.

However, securities experts advised a cautious approach despite the euphoria over the surge. The analysis team at Yuanta Vietnam noted that although the index rebounded strongly, subsequent recovery is likely to proceed at a more moderate pace, and trading activity may still remain limited. They also advised investors against hastily rushing into bottom-fishing, diagnosing that large-cap stocks could still pose downside pressure on the benchmark index. Accordingly, they recommended maintaining a conservative portfolio allocation of 60% cash and 40% stocks.
