Sana'a, Yemen - The Houthi militia in Yemen announced on Wednesday the release of the crew of the "Galaxy Leader," a vehicle carrier seized in November 2023 at the outset of their campaign targeting shipping in the Red Sea. The 25 crew members, hailing from the Philippines, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and Mexico, were released following mediation efforts by Oman.   

The Iran-backed Houthis justified the seizure of the Bahamas-flagged vessel, linked to Israeli billionaire Abraham "Rami" Ungar, by claiming it had connections to Israel. The attack, which involved a helicopter-borne raid, was widely publicized by the Houthis, with propaganda footage and even a music video shot aboard the ship.   

The Houthi campaign, launched in response to Israel's offensive in Gaza, significantly disrupted maritime traffic in the Red Sea, a critical corridor for global trade. The attacks, which included missile and drone strikes on over 100 merchant vessels, halved traffic through the region, severely impacting the revenue of Egypt, which operates the Suez Canal.   

While the Houthis have signaled a shift in their targeting strategy, limiting attacks to only Israeli-affiliated ships following a ceasefire in Gaza, concerns remain. Shipping companies are likely to remain wary of the volatile security situation, potentially deterring them from returning to the Red Sea route.   

The release of the crew is a significant development, but it remains to be seen whether it will pave the way for a full de-escalation of tensions in the Red Sea and a return to normalcy for maritime trade.
