Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services: "Stable growth during high temperatures and low willow-shoot mutation rates increase marketability"

The Floriculture Research Institute under the Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services is set to expand the distribution of 'Yellow Bean', a new domestic garden mum (chrysanthemum) variety that shows stable growth even during the high temperatures of summer and is capable of wintering outdoors in open fields.

'Yellow Bean' is a variety that blooms with vibrant yellow flowers starting in late September. It maintains stable growth and a uniform plant shape even during high-temperature periods, making it versatile for various spaces such as flower beds and pots.

In the case of garden mums, if night temperatures drop during spring or the summer rainy season, the growing points may fail to grow normally and instead differentiate prematurely into flower buds, a phenomenon known as 'willow-shoot mutation' (bud mutation with narrow leaves).

When willow-shoot mutation occurs, stem elongation stops, requiring additional labor for cultivation management, such as removing the prematurely differentiated growing points.

'Yellow Bean' is less prone to willow-shoot mutation, which reduces the labor required for removing growing points. It also maintains a uniform plant shape, making cultivation management easier and advantageous for enhancing marketability.

Additionally, its ability to survive the winter outdoors increases cultivation stability, and its vibrant yellow flowers in autumn provide excellent landscape aesthetics.

An official from the Floriculture Research Institute of the Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services stated, "'Yellow Bean' is a domestic garden mum variety that offers convenient cultivation management due to its low occurrence of willow-shoot mutation and stable growth even during high temperatures," adding, "We will promote the excellence of 'Yellow Bean', which has a wide range of applications in flower beds and pots, and expand the distribution of domestic garden mums."
