BOK Governor Hyunsong Shin Discloses 8.2 Billion Won in Assets, Moves to Liquidate Foreign Assets Amid Ethics Scrutiny

SEOUL — Bank of Korea (BOK) Governor Hyunsong Shin has officially disclosed a total personal net worth of 8.22 billion won (approximately $6.1 million), according to public asset declarations published in the official government gazette on July 24, 2026. The financial disclosure highlights significant steps taken by the central bank chief to liquidate his extensive foreign holdings and streamline his real estate portfolio to address potential conflict-of-interest concerns raised during his parliamentary confirmation process.

Financial Breakdown: Real Estate and Substantial Cash Reserves

he official public disclosure by the Government Public Ethics Committee revealed that Governor Shin’s net worth stands at 8.22 billion won, showing little variation from the 8.24 billion won reported prior to his parliamentary confirmation hearings in March.

A breakdown of the central banker’s assets reveals significant allocations across real estate and liquid banking deposits:

Real Estate Assets (3.59 Billion Won): Shin reported three residential properties. These include an apartment in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, valued at 1.51 billion won (currently occupied by his mother); a luxury officetel unit in D Palace, Jongno-gu, Seoul, jointly owned with his spouse and valued at 1.8 billion won; and an apartment in Chicago, Illinois, registered under his spouse’s name, valued at 280.36 million won.
Bank Deposits and Financial Holdings (4.61 Billion Won): Cash and bank deposits account for the largest share of the family's assets. Governor Shin holds 1.17 billion won in personal bank accounts, while his spouse holds 3.28 billion won. Their eldest son reported 148.89 million won in deposits along with 29.2 million won in foreign stock investments.

Resolving Conflict of Interest: Divesting Foreign Assets and Real Estate

During his parliamentary confirmation hearings, lawmakers raised sharp criticism regarding the composition of Governor Shin's wealth. At the time of his initial filing, foreign assets accounted for 55.5% (4.57 billion won) of his total net worth. More critically, 98% of his liquid non-real-estate financial holdings (4.65 billion won) were denominated in foreign currencies or invested in overseas markets.

Critics emphasized that holding substantial foreign currency deposits and overseas assets created an inherent conflict of interest for the head of South Korea's central bank, who directly oversees foreign exchange market interventions, interest rate policy, and national reserve management.

In response to parliamentary inquiries led by Reform Party Lawmaker Chun Ha-ram in May, the Bank of Korea confirmed that Governor Shin had initiated comprehensive divestments to align with public service ethics:

"Governor Shin has completed the sale of his personal foreign currency assets and repatriated the funds to South Korea. His spouse is likewise finalizing the sale of overseas Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and related holdings."
Furthermore, Governor Shin has committed to liquidating two of his three residential properties—specifically the Jongno officetel and the Chicago apartment—retaining only the primary family residence in Gangnam to resolve multi-homeownership concerns. Recent reports indicate that the sale and repatriation processes are nearing completion, marking a decisive shift toward ethical compliance for the central bank chief.
