DAEJEON, South Korea — South Korea’s Public Procurement Service (PPS) announced on July 24 that it held the "3rd Innovative Product Designation Ceremony of 2026" at the Government Complex Daejeon, officially awarding innovation certificates to 80 high-tech products recognized for exceptional public value and technological innovation.
The newly designated products span critical sectors including medical care, public safety, social welfare, and climate crisis response. Key highlights among the designated technologies include AI-based brain imaging analysis software, fully automated molecular diagnostic systems, patient-transport care robots, AI-driven road snow-melting systems, real-time wildfire detection solutions, and electric vehicle (EV) charging zone systems featuring AI power-demand forecasting.
Significant Expansion in Public Procurement and Market Growth
According to data released by the PPS, the total number of designated innovative products in the first half of 2026 reached 297, marking a 30% increase compared to 228 products during the same period last year. Driven by this expansion, public procurement sales for innovative products rose by over 10%, growing from 431.9 billion KRW ($312 million) to 476.9 billion KRW ($345 million) year-on-year.
The Innovation Procurement System, established by the South Korean government, serves as a crucial bridge between tech startups, small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs), and the public sector. By designating products as "Innovative Products," the government acts as a testbed and first buyer, allowing tech ventures to build operational track records and scale their businesses before entering private and international markets.
Streamlined Administrative Procedures to Accelerate Entry
To lower entry barriers for high-tech ventures, the PPS implemented major institutional reforms earlier this year:
Integrated Review Process: Merged separate evaluations for public utility and technological innovation into a single streamlined pipeline, significantly shortening overall assessment timelines.
Increased Designation Cycles: Expanded the annual selection frequency from three times to four times per year, providing tech firms with faster and more frequent market entry opportunities.
Strategic Focus on Physical AI and Future Industries
In the second half of 2026, the PPS plans to double down on strategic core industries. The agency will establish a dedicated evaluation framework for "Physical AI" products—technologies that integrate artificial intelligence directly into physical hardware like robotics, autonomous machinery, and smart infrastructure. Additionally, patent qualification rules for AI software products will be relaxed to accelerate public procurement intake.
Efforts to revamp "Innovation Market" (the dedicated online public procurement portal) and streamline administrative workflows will also be finalized to maximize user accessibility.
