South Classical music history has been rewritten in Rome as two South Korean baritons, Cho Hyun-mo and Kim Hyung-gu, have been appointed as permanent, tenured members of the prestigious Santa Cecilia National Academy Choir in Italy. This landmark achievement marks the first time in the 130-year history of the esteemed European ensemble that Asian vocalists have secured permanent positions within the choir.

According to the choir's official announcements and related academic sources, the historic breakthrough took place following a rigorous international audition held last July to fill two permanent baritone vacancies. Out of fierce global competition, Cho Hyun-mo captured first place, while Kim Hyung-gu secured second place, leading to their joint final selection as tenured members of the institution.

Established originally under papal decree in 1585, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is widely recognized as one of the oldest and most venerable musical institutions in the world. Its permanent choir, which took on its modern symphonic structure in 1895, has long stood at the pinnacle of European classical music. Over the decades, the ensemble has collaborated with legendary conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and regularly performs major choral-symphonic masterpieces at the highest international tier. Securing a permanent seat in this orchestra-affiliated choir represents a career-defining milestone for any professional classical singer.

The path to this historic appointment required extraordinary dedication and resilience, particularly for Kim Hyung-gu. A graduate of Sahmyook University in South Korea, Kim initially worked as a university staff member for eight years after completing his undergraduate studies. Choosing to follow his passion for classical performance later in life, he made the courageous decision to move to Italy for vocal studies in his late thirties. He successfully graduated from the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in 2022 and subsequently gained valuable practical experience by serving as a guest choir member for the Santa Cecilia National Academy Choir starting in May of last year.

Reflecting on his appointment through his alma mater, Kim stated that he will continue to push his boundaries to become a vocalist who can gracefully transcend the barriers of language and culture.

Co-recipient Cho Hyun-mo has similarly built a robust artistic footprint within the demanding Italian classical scene. Having dedicated years to rigorous vocal study and performance activity in Italy, Cho built substantial familiarity with the institution's demanding repertoire. Notably, he participated in several high-profile performances with the academy's choir, including a standout appearance in the choral drama "Antigone" last year, which helped pave the way for his triumphant first-place finish in the competitive auditions.

This dual appointment serves as a powerful testament to the rising global stature of South Korean classical musicians on the international stage. As Cho and Kim step into their permanent roles in Rome, they open a brand-new chapter for Asian vocalists in historic European institutions, inspiring a new generation of artists aspiring to conquer the world's most demanding classical stages.
