SEOUL — JB Financial Group is officially expanding its global footprint beyond Southeast Asia, setting its sights on Central Asia through the planned acquisition of two financial institutions in Kyrgyzstan.
According to the financial holding company on Thursday, its consumer finance subsidiary, JB Woori Capital, has reached an agreement to acquire Korky Credit and Korky Leasing from their parent company, Epoche. The transaction encompasses full ownership—100 percent of the shares in both firms—and is slated to close before the end of the year, pending regulatory approvals and official registration in Kyrgyzstan.
This strategic move marks a significant milestone for JB Financial, establishing its presence in a fifth overseas market. The group's current international portfolio includes commercial banking operations in Cambodia, microfinance services in Myanmar, and securities businesses in Vietnam. Furthermore, the group recently secured regulatory clearance in Indonesia this September to acquire an 85 percent controlling stake in KB Bukopin Finance, a prominent local financing provider.
Tapping into High-Growth Potential
JB Financial’s strategic pivot toward Kyrgyzstan is primarily driven by the nation's favorable demographics and robust economic momentum. Market analysts and official reports highlight that approximately 70 percent of Kyrgyzstan's population is under the age of 40, creating a dynamic, consumption-driven consumer base.
On the macroeconomic front, the country demonstrated stellar performance last year. According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, Kyrgyzstan’s economy expanded by an impressive 11.1 percent last year. While the IMF forecasts a moderated growth rate of 6.1 percent for this year, the market remains one of the most promising emerging economies in the region.
Focus on Auto Lending and Strategic Diversification
Following the acquisition, JB Woori Capital plans to leverage its core competencies to drive initial growth. Auto financing will serve as the cornerstone of its market entry strategy, capitalizing on rising local demand for used vehicles.
By combining JB Woori Capital’s advanced technological expertise and operational know-how in car installment loans and equipment leasing with the established local distribution networks of Korky Credit and Korky Leasing, the company aims to rapidly capture market share. Over the long term, JB Financial intends to diversify its revenue streams in the region, gradually reducing its reliance on traditional retail finance by expanding into corporate and broader financial services.
Navigating Domestic Limitations Through Global Growth
Industry watchers note that this overseas expansion mirrors broader trends within South Korea’s financial sector. With domestic growth constrained by market saturation, strict regulations, and a rapidly aging population, Korean financial institutions are increasingly looking overseas to secure new engines for long-term profitability.
"This landmark deal represents a crucial strategic step toward extending our financial network from Southeast Asia into Central Asia," a senior official at JB Financial stated. "We are fully committed to combining JB Woori Capital’s proven auto financing expertise with a carefully tailored, localized approach. Our goal is to successfully establish ourselves in Kyrgyzstan and lay a robust foundation for sustainable, global growth."
As the transaction moves toward its final closing stages later this year, industry observers will be closely watching how JB Financial translates its domestic success into the burgeoning Central Asian market.
