Tehran has issued a sharp and direct warning to South Korea, cautioning Seoul against succumbing to U.S. pressure to deploy military assets or participate in operations in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. 

The diplomatic friction escalated after Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to publish an unusual message written directly in Korean. While acknowledging the 64-year history of diplomatic and friendly relations between Iran and South Korea based on mutual respect, Baghaei strongly objected to Seoul’s recent deliberations over joining U.S.-led maritime security initiatives. 

The Iranian spokesperson stated that any military presence or operational participation by third countries in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz would be viewed as direct support for "aggression". He explicitly warned that such a choice would entail "serious consequences," urging sovereign nations not to yield to U.S. intimidation or become accomplices in actions against the Iranian people. The posts also featured graphic warnings emphasizing that dangerous choices carry heavy costs. 

This tension unfolds against a backdrop of intensified geopolitical pressure from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Washington has repeatedly pressed allies—particularly energy-dependent nations that import large volumes of Middle Eastern crude—to share the burden of safeguarding the vital waterway. President Trump and U.S. officials have publicly criticized countries that hesitate to provide military contributions, heightening diplomatic dilemmas for capitals like Seoul. 

In response to Tehran’s public rebuke, South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained a measured stance. Seoul emphasized that it is closely communicating with international partners, including relevant countries, to support regional stability, peace, and the freedom of navigation for all vessels. Diplomatic observers note that while South Korea weighs potential options—ranging from maritime patrol assets to logistics support—it is carefully navigating the delicate balance between alliance commitments to Washington and avoiding severe fallout with Tehran.
