KAUDA NAMODA, ZAMFARA STATE, NIGERIA - A devastating fire broke out at an Islamic school in the Kauru Namoda area of Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria on Monday, claiming the lives of at least 17 children, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The agency reported that around 100 children were present in the school at the time of the incident.

In addition to the fatalities, 17 other children suffered severe burns and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. NEMA has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. While the exact cause remains unknown, preliminary investigations suggest that a pile of sticks used for oral hygiene, locally known as 'kara', stored near the school, may have contributed to the blaze.

The Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of children in schools.
