HELSINKI – Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has issued an official apology to South Korea, China, and Japan following a racism scandal involving Miss Finland and members of the ruling coalition. The incident, which began as a social media controversy, has escalated into a diplomatic crisis, prompting fears of long-term damage to Finland's relations with Asian markets.

The backlash began when Sara Chafak, Miss Finland, posted a photo of herself pulling her eyes upward—a derogatory gesture mocking East Asians—with a caption stating she was "dining with Chinese people." Despite her claims that she was merely rubbing her temples due to a headache, public outrage led to the immediate stripping of her title.

The situation turned political when several lawmakers from the far-right Finns Party, a member of the coalition government, posted similar photos in a show of solidarity with the model. Prime Minister Orpo intervened by releasing a statement through the Finnish Embassy in Seoul, stating: "I sincerely apologize for the offense caused by the social media posts of certain parliamentarians. Racism and discrimination in any form are absolutely unacceptable in Finnish society."

The economic fallout has been swift. Finnair is currently facing a backlash in the Asian market, and a major TV production partnership with Japan has been suspended. The Finnish Parliament is scheduled to meet on the 18th to discuss disciplinary actions against the involved lawmakers, as the government scrambles to restore its international reputation and preserve vital diplomatic and economic ties with Asia.
