Spider-Man 4 Reaches 2 Million Viewers in Record Time This Year

SEOUL — Spider-Man: Brand New Day (commonly referred to as Spider-Man 4) has officially shattered this year’s domestic box office records by becoming the fastest film to surpass the two million viewer mark.

Distributor Sony Pictures announced on August 1 that the superhero blockbuster recorded a cumulative audience of 2,107,469 as of 12:05 a.m. on its fourth day of release. According to Sony Pictures, this milestone represents the fastest trajectory to two million theatergoers among all films released so far this year.

This rapid climb outpaces major domestic releases of the year. Both Director Yeon Sang-ho’s Colony (Gunche) and Director Na Hong-jin’s Hope took five days to cross the two million ticket mark, giving the web-slinger a full day’s head start over its closest competitors.

Sony Pictures highlighted that the movie's current momentum mirrors that of past historical blockbusters. The four-day achievement is two days faster than Avatar and 12.12: The Day, which rank ninth and tenth in South Korea’s all-time box office history, respectively. Both of those films reached two million viewers on their sixth day and went on to exceed 13 million total admissions.

Furthermore, the distributor noted that Spider-Man 4 is currently pacing at the exact same rate as 2024’s top two box office hits, Exhuma and The Roundharm: Punishment (The Roundup: Punishment). Both 2024 hits eventually went on to draw over 11 million viewers during their respective theatrical runs.

A Mature Peter Parker Faces Solitude

Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows the journey of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) after the devastating events of the previous film, which left him completely forgotten by everyone he loved—including his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon).

The new installment captures Peter navigating deep isolation while stepping into adulthood. Marking the first chapter in the franchise where Peter is portrayed as a full-fledged adult, the film showcases a visibly matured hero taking on formidable threats with newfound resilience and independence.

With its record-setting opening weekend numbers, industry analysts are closely watching to see whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day will become the next major entry in South Korea’s highly coveted 10-million-viewer club.
