Naver Webtoon Launches Triple IP Expansion Strategy Across Short-Form Video, Animation, and Games

Naver Webtoon is officially accelerating its multi-faceted strategy to expand its popular webtoon intellectual properties (IPs) into new digital entertainment formats, including short-form video, animation, and gaming. By leveraging its rich catalog of stories, the company aims to establish a self-sustaining ecosystem where audiences introduced through secondary media naturally gravitate back to the original webtoon platforms.

According to content industry sources, Naver Webtoon finalized its new IP utilization blueprint to align with fast-evolving global consumption trends. Recognizing the explosive popularity of snackable video content on mobile devices, the company has ramped up production of short-form dramas designed to capture new users worldwide.

Building on an initial collaboration with LG Uplus last year to produce short-form video adaptations streamed via Naver TV and Chzzk, the platform is now aggressively targeting Western markets. Webtoon Entertainment, Naver Webtoon's parent company, announced the release of live-action short-form drama adaptations based on hit romance webtoons. Each series consists of 40 to 50 episodes, running about one to two minutes per episode, and launched in English and French. Unlike previous domestic experiments, these new releases operate on a partial monetization model, requiring users to spend paid coins after viewing initial free episodes, thereby creating a direct revenue stream alongside user acquisition.

In parallel, Naver Webtoon is making aggressive inroads into the global animation sector. Major global hits such as Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint and Overgeared are being adapted into animated series, alongside other trending titles gaining traction in the United States. Industry analysts note that animation serves as a powerful medium for fantasy and supernatural world-building because it preserves the exact visual designs of beloved characters, satisfying core fanbases while tapping into the massive, pre-existing global animation market.

Furthermore, the company is systematically bridging its webtoon IPs into interactive gaming. The strategy mirrors successful industry benchmarks where animated adaptations propel derivative games into global hits. To cement this pipeline, Webtoon Entertainment recently invested 100 million dollars to acquire a 60 percent controlling stake in South Korean game developer R-AI Games Holding. This acquisition brings specialized development studios like Grey Games and Offbeat under its corporate umbrella, which are actively developing new titles based on Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint and Overgeared.

Through this comprehensive expansion into short-form videos, animation, and video games, Naver Webtoon is cementing a powerful virtuous cycle. Consumers who first experience these derivative media adaptations frequently cross over to the primary webtoon platforms to explore the original works, driving continuous global growth and maximizing long-term IP valuation.
