The global landscape of digital content consumption is undergoing a seismic shift, driven by the rapid growth of AI services like ChatGPT. As users increasingly turn to AI for instant, personalized information, traditional platforms such as YouTube and Facebook are facing a potential overhaul.

According to SimilarWeb, a leading website analytics company, ChatGPT's traffic surged by 17% month-over-month and a staggering 115.9% year-over-year in October. This marks the second consecutive month of significant growth, with the AI chatbot surpassing Microsoft's Bing in monthly visits in May and maintaining a more than twofold lead since then.

In October alone, ChatGPT recorded approximately 3.7 billion monthly visits, surpassing Google Chrome's estimated 3.45 billion monthly active users. This underscores ChatGPT's dominant position in the AI tools market and its rapid growth.

The trend extends beyond ChatGPT, with other AI tools also experiencing substantial growth. Anthropic's Claude saw a 25.5% month-over-month increase and a 394.9% year-over-year increase, reaching 84.1 million visits. Perplexity also recorded significant growth, with 90.8 million visits, representing a 25.5% month-over-month increase and a 199.2% year-over-year increase.

Microsoft's Copilot website experienced a remarkable 87.6% month-over-month growth in October, reaching 69.4 million visits. NotebookLM also saw a substantial 200% increase month-over-month, with 31.5 million visits.

These figures highlight the dramatic shift in how people search for information online, with AI-powered tools rapidly becoming the go-to choice for many.

"While there is a difference between ChatGPT's 'number of visits' and Google Chrome's 'number of unique users,' the data clearly indicates that ChatGPT is replacing some of the functionalities of traditional search engines," said an IT industry insider. "AI services are poised to rapidly take over a portion of the search market that was once dominated by traditional portal services."

AI tools offer a more personalized and interactive user experience by providing tailored responses to user queries and delivering real-time information. This is in contrast to traditional search engines, which rely on indexing vast amounts of web pages to provide search results.

"AI tools are differentiating themselves by providing direct answers to user queries, rather than relying on users to sift through search results," said another industry expert. "As AI tools become more sophisticated, we can expect to see a rapid shift in information seeking behavior from traditional platforms to AI-powered tools."

Some experts predict that AI could even replace some of the functions of social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook. The more personalized and interactive nature of AI-powered interactions could make them more appealing to users than traditional social media feeds.

"AI has the potential to gradually replace some of the functions of social media," said Park Sung-ho, president of the Korea Internet Industry Association. "AI can provide users with the information they need instantly through queries, making it a potential replacement for some of the search and social media functions."

However, the growing dominance of AI in information retrieval raises concerns about potential biases and misinformation. As AI models are trained on vast amounts of data, they can inadvertently perpetuate existing biases and inaccuracies.

"If AI is primarily developed in countries like the United States, the information it provides may be biased towards a U.S. perspective," said Park. "To ensure the diversity and accuracy of information, it is essential to have a variety of AI services developed by different entities around the world."
