London, England – Speculation surrounding South Korean forward Son Heung-min's future at Tottenham Hotspur continues to swirl, with a move to Spanish giants FC Barcelona once again emerging as a possibility.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported on [date] that Barcelona has included Son on its shortlist of potential winter transfer window signings. The report, citing British tabloid The Sun, suggests that Barcelona has already initiated contact with Son, whose contract with Tottenham is set to expire on June 30.
Son has been a pivotal figure for Tottenham since joining the club in 2015, becoming one of the Premier League's most prolific goalscorers. However, with the player approaching his mid-30s, there has been no official announcement regarding a contract extension. Given Tottenham's reported one-year extension option, the lack of clarity has fueled transfer speculation.
In addition to Barcelona, Son has been linked with several other top European clubs, including Premier League rivals Manchester United and Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have also expressed interest. Despite the persistent rumors, both Son and Tottenham have remained tight-lipped on the matter.
However, experts have cast doubt on the feasibility of a move to Barcelona due to the club's ongoing financial difficulties. Last summer, Barcelona made a significant investment by signing midfielder Dani Olmo for a reported €60 million, but the club has been unable to register him due to La Liga's strict salary cap regulations. The potential need to offload Olmo to comply with financial fair play rules could hinder Barcelona's ability to pursue other high-profile targets like Son.
