SHANGHAI — Samsung Electronics has been lauded by the Chinese Communist Party’s flagship newspaper, the People’s Daily, as an indispensable partner deeply integrated into China’s industrial ecosystem.
In its November 8 edition, the People’s Daily dedicated a prominent feature on Page 6 to Samsung’s enduring participation in the China International Import Expo (CIIE). Marking its ninth consecutive appearance at the Shanghai-based expo, Samsung designed its exhibition hall in the shape of a semiconductor chip, offering visitors an immersive look at its cutting-edge product portfolio and innovation capabilities.
The newspaper highlighted several key technologies showcased by Samsung at this year’s event, including Low Power DRAM (LPDDR) with Processing-in-Memory capabilities, next-generation UFS 5.0 storage, flagship foldable smartphones integrated with AI services, the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HPCS image sensor, AI-powered medical ultrasound systems, and Harman audio solutions. Observers noted that Samsung’s exhibition strategy has shifted its primary focus from finished consumer goods toward fundamental technologies and comprehensive innovation capabilities.
Zhang Daijun, Vice President of Samsung China, emphasized the company’s evolving strategy during the expo. "In the past, our main focus was introducing top-tier products into China," Zhang said. "Today, we aim to combine research, development, and manufacturing locally to grow alongside the Chinese market."
According to the People’s Daily, Samsung’s cumulative investment in China has reached approximately $59 billion, with advanced industries accounting for roughly 90% of that total. The tech giant currently operates 15 production facilities and 14 R&D centers across the country, establishing a robust operational foundation that seamlessly spans both manufacturing and research.
The report also spotlighted three major "firsts" introduced by Samsung in China this year: the establishment of a biopharmaceutical R&D center in Beijing, a high-end medical device production line in Suzhou, and the company's first overseas advanced production technology research institute, also located in Suzhou.
Zhang noted that China offers not only a massive consumer market but also an increasingly sophisticated industrial support and innovation ecosystem, giving multinational corporations strong confidence to anchor their advanced industries deeply in the region.
The People’s Daily framed Samsung’s trajectory as a textbook example of how multinational enterprises can transcend simple product sales, expanding their local operations to encompass R&D, manufacturing, and supply chains to boost competitiveness in tandem with China’s industrial network.
Data from China’s Ministry of Commerce indicates that foreign direct investment (FDI) in China’s high-tech industries reached 228.53 billion yuan (approx. $31.8 billion) between January and September this year, representing a 33.8% year-on-year increase and accounting for 41.6% of total inbound FDI.
Concluding its coverage, the People’s Daily stated that by continuously rolling out localized innovations and rooting itself firmly in domestic supply chains, Samsung has evolved into a global partner contributing through localized success, driven by China's expanding open-door policies that offer broader opportunities for global corporations.
