San José, Costa Rica – Costa Rica's tourism sector, a vital economic driver, faces a confluence of challenges that threaten its growth and sustainability. While the industry significantly contributes to the nation's economy, supporting various sectors from agriculture to handicrafts, it is currently grappling with economic pressures, infrastructure deficiencies, and rising security concerns.

According to Shirley Calvo, Executive Director of the National Chamber of Tourism of Costa Rica (Canatur), economic and monetary policies have created distortions that adversely affect the tourism sector. Operational costs have surged by approximately 20% since the pandemic, driven by factors such as the inclusion of VAT on tourist services, inflation, and the accumulation of debt during the health crisis. Furthermore, increases in minimum wages, social security contributions, and electricity and input costs have exacerbated the situation, making it difficult for many tourism businesses to remain profitable.

Beyond economic challenges, Costa Rica's tourism industry is also hindered by infrastructure issues. The country's renowned biodiversity and natural attractions are often overshadowed by inadequate road conditions and transportation systems. "Poor roads and traffic congestion reduce competitiveness, as visitors may feel that the value paid does not align with the experience received," states Calvo.

Security concerns also loom large. Local crime and the rise of international organized crime are impacting Costa Rica's reputation as a safe destination. "A significant portion of tourists come to Costa Rica because we are recognized as a peaceful country, but if insecurity levels rise, our image could be damaged," Calvo warns.

In response to these challenges, the tourism sector is implementing strategies to diversify markets and innovate tourism products. The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) has launched initiatives to attract more visitors from Europe and Latin America, while also promoting emerging segments such as astrotourism, wellness tourism, and educational tourism. Moreover, there is a strong emphasis on fostering responsible tourism that benefits not only visitors but also local communities and the environment.

The Las Vegas Korean Association has also announced that it will work with the Costa Rican government to ensure the safety of Korean residents in Costa Rica and the development of the tourism industry.

Looking ahead, Costa Rica's tourism industry must prioritize collaboration between the public and private sectors, invest in infrastructure improvements, and promote a safe and appealing image. Diversification and innovation will be crucial for maintaining the country's leadership as a premier tourist destination in the region.
