Legendary singer-songwriter Elton John has revealed that he has suffered partial vision loss due to a severe eye infection. The "Tiny Dancer" hitmaker shared the news in an interview with "Good Morning America," explaining that he contracted the infection in southern France in July.
"I haven't done anything for a while. I've got to start again," John said. "I got an infection in the south of France in July in my right eye, and I've lost the sight in my right eye. My left eye isn't great either. It's coming back, but it's a bit of a struggle at the moment. So I can't really do much. I can't go into a studio and record because I can't read the words."
The 77-year-old star, who shares two sons, Zachary and Elijah, with husband David Furnish, admitted that the situation has been "a shock." "I'm trying to get my sight back," he said. "But at the moment, that's all I'm concentrating on. It's never nice when things like this happen. You can't see anything. You can't read anything, you can't look at anything."
Despite his health challenges, the "I'm Still Standing" singer and subject of the Disney+ documentary "Elton John: Never Farewell Yellow Brick Road" remains positive. "I'm very lucky," he said. "I'm the luckiest person in the world. I'm proud of the documentary, I'm proud of my boys, and I'm proud of the way I've dealt with this situation. I'm very lucky and very grateful. I've been through a lot and I've come out the other side."
John first shared the news of his eye infection on Instagram in September, writing, "I've been suffering from a severe eye infection this summer, and unfortunately, have lost the sight in one eye. I'm having treatment but the process is slow and it will take time before my vision returns. I'm incredibly grateful for the superb medical care I've received over the last few weeks, and all the love and support from my family and friends. I've been quietly recuperating at home and am positive about the progress I've made so far in my recovery and health."
