KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially declared a new outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD), marking the 16th time the country has grappled with the deadly illness. According to Minister of Health Roger Kamba, the outbreak was confirmed on September 4 after a 34-year-old pregnant woman, who was hospitalized with a high fever and recurrent vomiting, tested positive for the virus.

The health ministry's statement indicates a swift and concerning spread, with 28 suspected cases already reported in the southern Kasai province, leading to 15 confirmed deaths. These figures underscore the virus's rapid and lethal progression, highlighting the urgent need for a robust public health response.

Ebola, named after the Ebola River in the DRC where it was first identified in 1976, is a viral hemorrhagic fever known for its extreme virulence. The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or animal. Its symptoms, including high fever and internal bleeding, can quickly become fatal. Without timely and proper treatment, the disease can have a fatality rate as high as 80-90%.

The DRC's history with Ebola is extensive and tragic. The most severe outbreak on record, which ravaged West Africa from 2013 to 2016, resulted in over 11,300 deaths, serving as a stark reminder of the virus's potential for widespread devastation.
