CANNES, France — One of the most anticipated cinematic events of the year is finally set to take the stage. South Korean auteur Na Hong-jin, the visionary behind the cult-classic The Wailing (2016), is returning to the global spotlight with his latest feature, HOPE. The film will make its world premiere at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2026, as part of the prestigious Competition section.

A Star-Studded Gala at the Grand Théâtre Lumière
According to distributor Plus M Entertainment, the world premiere is scheduled for 9:30 PM (local time) at the iconic Grand Théâtre Lumière. The screening will be preceded by a high-profile red carpet event featuring a powerhouse international cast. Director Na will lead a delegation that includes South Korean heavyweights Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Squid Game breakout star Jung Ho-yeon. Joining them are Academy Award-nominated actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, along with Taylor Russell, marking a rare and grand collaboration between Chungmuro and Hollywood.

The following day, May 18, the team will participate in an official photo call and a press conference to discuss the ambitious production, which has been shrouded in mystery for nearly two years.

A High-Stakes Mystery Near the DMZ
HOPE is described as a genre-bending sci-fi thriller set in Hopo Port, a remote coastal village located near the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The story begins when the village is thrown into chaos by the suspected appearance of a predator—initially thought to be a tiger. However, local residents soon realize they are confronting an inexplicable and terrifying extraterrestrial presence.

Zo In-sung plays Sung-ki, a young resident caught in the middle of the escalating crisis.
The "Aliens": Notably, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Taylor Russell utilized advanced motion capture and facial capture technology to portray the film’s mysterious non-human entities, adding a layer of high-tech realism to Na's signature gritty atmosphere.

Breaking Records and Making History
With a reported production budget of approximately 50 billion KRW (USD 36 million), HOPE is one of the most expensive projects in the history of Korean cinema. This investment reflects the immense trust in Na Hong-jin, who has now made history as the first Korean director to have all of his feature films invited to Cannes.

His previous outings include The Chaser (Midnight Screenings, 2008), The Yellow Sea (Un Certain Regard, 2011), and The Wailing (Out of Competition, 2016). HOPE marks his first entry into the Main Competition, where he will compete for the coveted Palme d'Or.

Global Distribution and Summer Release
The film’s global footprint is already substantial. NEON, the distributor behind the North American success of Parasite, has secured the rights for the U.S. and Canada, while MUBI will handle distribution across several European and Latin American territories.

As the world looks toward the Croisette on May 17, expectations are sky-high for what is being called a "paradigm-shifting" science fiction experience. Following its Cannes debut, HOPE is slated for a wide theatrical release in South Korea and international markets in Summer 2026.
