Lima, Peru - President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra celebrated the return of the B.A.P. Carrasco, Peru's Polar Oceanographic Vessel, marking the successful completion of the 31st Peruvian Scientific Campaign to Antarctica (Antar XXXI). This expedition underscores Peru's unwavering commitment to scientific research, environmental preservation, and its active role in the Antarctic Treaty System.
President Boluarte emphasized the significance of the expedition, stating, "This mission not only elevates Peru's standing on the global stage but also reinforces our dedication to the Antarctic continent. By ensuring the continuity of our research projects and maintaining our Machu Picchu scientific base, we are contributing valuable knowledge to the international scientific community."
The Antar XXXI campaign focused on a range of scientific studies, including climate change monitoring, marine biology, and glaciology. These studies are crucial for understanding the impact of global environmental changes and for preserving the unique ecosystem of Antarctica.
"Antarctica's strategic, ecological, and economic importance cannot be overstated," President Boluarte noted. "As the planet's last reserve of pure air, its preservation is vital, especially for countries like Peru, whose climate is closely linked to Antarctic conditions."
Peru's involvement in Antarctic research dates back 35 years, guided by the principles of peace, cooperation, and scientific advancement. As a consultative party to the Antarctic Treaty, Peru actively participates in maintaining Antarctica as a zone of peace and scientific collaboration.
The successful completion of the Antar XXXI campaign highlights Peru's ongoing efforts to expand its scientific capabilities and contribute to the global understanding of Antarctica. The nation's commitment to this remote and vital continent reflects its dedication to environmental stewardship and international cooperation.
