SEOUL — Samsung Electronics announced on Thursday that it has officially opened applications for the 12th Samsung Collegiate Programming Challenge (SCPC). This annual competition is a cornerstone of the tech giant’s long-term strategy to discover top-tier software talent and expand the global technology ecosystem.

Since its inception in 2015, the SCPC has established itself as South Korea’s premier software competition for higher education students. Over the past eleven years, the challenge has attracted more than 40,000 participants, serving as a prestigious launching pad for 393 elite winners who have gone on to shape the regional and international tech landscapes.

Expanding Horizons: The Introduction of Agentic AI

Unlike previous iterations that focused primarily on traditional coding, the 2026 SCPC introduces a major restructuring to reflect the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. This year, the competition will be divided into two distinct tracks:

The AI Challenge: A newly introduced category designed to evaluate participants' capabilities in developing Agentic AI—autonomous systems capable of independent reasoning, decision-making, and execution.
The Software Algorithm Challenge: The classic track focusing heavily on core programming prowess, complex mathematical modeling, and algorithmic problem-solving speed.
A senior representative from Samsung Research noted that the inclusion of an Agentic AI track highlights the company's commitment to staying ahead of the technological curve. As industries shift from passive AI tools to proactive, agent-based autonomous systems, cultivating young talent with practical experience in this sector has become a matter of national competitiveness.

Key Competition Dates and Structure

The challenge is open to all undergraduate and graduate students with a passion for programming, regardless of their major, academic year, or nationality.

Application Window: June 11, 2026 – July 5, 2026

The rigorous multi-stage competition will be held across the summer, starting with online preliminary rounds and culminating in highly competitive, in-person finals.

1. Preliminary Rounds (Online)
To accommodate a vast number of applicants, the preliminary rounds will be hosted on Samsung's proprietary online testing platforms:

AI Challenge Preliminaries: The first round will take place from July 6 to July 12, followed by a second, more advanced qualifying round from July 29 to August 5.
Software Algorithm Challenge Preliminaries: The first round is scheduled for July 10–11, with the second round taking place on August 1.

2. Championship Finals (In-person)
Contestants who successfully survive the preliminary cuts will be invited to the ultimate showdown at the Samsung Electronics Seoul R&D Campus located in Umyeon-dong, Seocho District, Seoul.
