As winter temperatures plummet and outdoor activities increase, the risk of developing hemorrhoids, a painful and uncomfortable condition affecting the anus, is also on the rise. This is especially true for hemorrhoids, the most common type of anal condition, which can progress to require surgery if left untreated.
Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the anus that can cause pain, itching, and bleeding. They are often caused by straining during bowel movements, which can put pressure on the blood vessels in the anal area.
There are two main types of hemorrhoids: internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids are located inside the anus, while external hemorrhoids are located outside the anus. Symptoms of hemorrhoids can vary depending on their severity, but may include:
Pain
Itching
Bleeding
Swelling
A lump or bulge near the anus
Other anal conditions, such as anal fissures (tears in the lining of the anus) and anal fistulas (small tunnels near the anus), can also occur.
"Hemorrhoids are particularly common in winter due to several factors," said Dr. Go Yoon-song, the head of the abdominal center at Seran Hospital. "Cold weather can cause blood vessels in the anus to constrict, leading to poor circulation. Additionally, winter activities like skiing and sledding, which involve sitting on cold surfaces or bending over for extended periods, can put strain on the anal area."
While mild cases of hemorrhoids and anal fissures can often be treated with conservative measures, such as over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes, more severe cases may require surgery.
To prevent hemorrhoids, experts recommend:
Eating a high-fiber diet
Drinking plenty of fluids
Avoiding straining during bowel movements
Exercising regularly
Maintaining a healthy weight
"Hemorrhoids are a common condition that can be easily treated if caught early," said Dr. Go. "However, many people hesitate to seek medical attention because they are embarrassed. It's important to remember that hemorrhoids are a medical condition and should be treated by a healthcare professional."
If you are experiencing symptoms of hemorrhoids, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
