SEOUL, South Korea – As the number of foreign residents in South Korea continues to climb, so does the demand for enhanced accessibility and convenience in telecommunications services. In response, LG Uplus is spearheading an innovative approach to elevate the foreigner customer experience. The company announced on the 22nd that it will provide application-related documents in a market-leading 17 languages and plans to operate specialized stores for foreign customers at key locations nationwide. This strategic move aims to alleviate the difficulties foreign residents often face when subscribing to and utilizing telecom services, maximizing customer satisfaction through tailored offerings.
Bridging the Language Gap with Extensive Multilingual Support
One of the most significant hurdles for foreign residents when signing up for telecommunications services has historically been the language barrier. Many have expressed frustration over key documents, such as application forms and terms of service, being available only in Korean, making it challenging to grasp the content accurately. LG Uplus is directly addressing this issue by producing and distributing essential documents in a remarkable 17 languages, including Korean, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Thai, Burmese, Mongolian, Uzbek, and Lao. This extensive language support surpasses that of any other domestic telecom provider, empowering foreign customers of diverse nationalities to access accurate information and subscribe to services in their native tongues. Introducing Specialized Foreigner Stores and Global Telecom Centers
Beyond language support, LG Uplus is systematically overhauling and operating specialized stores for foreign customers. A total of 67 stores nationwide are slated for conversion into these specialized branches. These revamped stores will feature multilingual guides and displays both inside and outside, significantly improving visual information accessibility. Furthermore, the company plans to provide customized assistance, taking into account the proportion of foreign residents and the prevalence of specific languages in each region, thereby offering practical convenience.
Notably, 17 stores with a high influx of foreign customers will be transformed into 'Global Telecom Centers,' dedicated to providing expert consultation for foreign residents. These centers will go beyond simple information dissemination, specializing in resolving telecom-related grievances for foreign customers. They are poised to become crucial hubs, minimizing the inconveniences foreign customers may encounter due to linguistic and cultural differences and supporting their seamless access to stable telecommunication services.
Strengthening Service Capabilities with Expanded Professional Counselors
To ensure the successful operation of these specialized stores and Global Telecom Centers, LG Uplus has substantially increased its pool of professional counselors specializing in foreign customer support. The company currently boasts over 170 counselors of diverse nationalities, including Chinese and Russian speakers. These specialists will be strategically deployed to the foreign-specialized stores, directly assisting visiting foreign customers and resolving any service-related issues. Their role extends beyond merely facilitating telecom service subscriptions; they will offer comprehensive, specialized consultations tailored to the diverse needs of foreign customers, encompassing essential telecom information for daily life in Korea, mobile plan consultations, and roaming service guidance. This expansion of professional personnel is pivotal in enhancing customer satisfaction by providing personalized service to each foreign customer, going beyond mere infrastructure improvements.

LG Uplus's innovation in the foreigner customer experience is a proactive response to the continuous increase in foreign residents in South Korea. According to statistics from the Ministry of Justice's Korea Immigration Service, the number of foreign nationals residing in Korea surpassed approximately 2.51 million by the end of 2023, accounting for roughly 4.8% of the total population. These individuals, including international students, expatriates, migrant workers, and marriage immigrants, reside in Korea for various purposes and have become integral members of Korean society.
As the foreign population grows, so does their demand for telecommunications services. However, until now, telecom services have predominantly been offered in Korean, leading to inconveniences for foreign customers due to a lack of information and communication difficulties. LG Uplus's investment in this area demonstrates a keen understanding of market demands and a proactive strategy to target foreign customers as a new growth engine.
