Bonghwa County, nestled in the inland region of North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, is embarking on an ambitious tourism development project that seeks to revitalize the local economy and attract visitors through a unique cultural fusion. The county has officially announced its plan to cultivate its flagship K-Vietnam Valley initiative under the catchy and evocative brand name 'Bongt'nam' – a portmanteau of Bonghwa and Vietnam. This strategic branding marks the commencement of a concerted effort to transform the region into a distinctive Vietnam-themed tourist destination.
The ambitious project received a significant boost with Bonghwa County's selection for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's (MCST) prestigious '2025 Planned and Publicly Offered Regional Tourism Development Project.' This competitive program, designed to empower local governments to spearhead tourism initiatives tailored to their specific needs and assets, will see Bonghwa County secure a substantial 6 billion Korean Won (approximately 4.5 million USD) in national funding. The selection process was rigorous, involving submissions from 14 metropolitan and provincial entities across South Korea, culminating in the selection of just three recipients, with Bonghwa representing North Gyeongsang Province.
Over the next five years, from 2025 to 2029, Bonghwa County will channel a total investment of 12 billion KRW (approximately 9 million USD) – comprising 6 billion KRW in national funds, 1.8 billion KRW in provincial funds, and 4.2 billion KRW in county funds – into realizing the Bongt'nam vision, intrinsically linked to the broader K-Vietnam Valley development project.
The county's successful proposal, aptly themed 'Fostering Bongt'nam (Bonghwa + Vietnam), the only Vietnam-themed attraction in Korea,' hinges on leveraging a unique historical connection: the presence of the only known vestige of the Vietnamese Ly Dynasty in South Korea, located within Bonghwa County. The project envisions a multi-faceted approach, encompassing the strategic development of the 'Bongt'nam' brand, the creation of an immersive Vietnam-themed village, the development of integrated tourism packages that highlight the synergy between Korean and Vietnamese culture, and the establishment of robust management and operational frameworks to ensure the project's long-term sustainability.
The overarching goal is to establish Bonghwa County as a prominent tourism hub in the northern inland region of Gyeongsang Province, attracting not only domestic Korean tourists but also the growing number of Vietnamese residents in South Korea and international travelers interested in exploring this unique cultural intersection.
The K-Vietnam Valley project has been a subject of extensive inter-ministerial discussions, with Bonghwa County actively engaging with the MCST, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to the development. This collaborative effort underscores the strategic importance of the project for the region's economic and cultural landscape.
Bonghwa County Mayor Park Hyun-guk expressed optimism about the project's potential, stating, "This is expected to play a role like welcome rain for the K-Vietnam Valley development, which will be a turning point in overcoming the crisis of local extinction." Rural areas across South Korea face the challenge of declining populations and economic stagnation, and cultural tourism initiatives like Bongt'nam are increasingly seen as viable strategies for revitalization. Mayor Park further emphasized the county's commitment to providing "domestic and international tourists with special experiences where they can feel Vietnam," highlighting the unique experiential aspect of the planned attractions.
The relationship between South Korea and Vietnam has deepened significantly in recent decades, evolving from a complex historical past to a dynamic partnership characterized by strong economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties. Vietnam has emerged as a key economic partner for South Korea, with significant Korean investment in Vietnamese manufacturing and infrastructure. Cultural exchange and tourism between the two nations have also been on the rise, reflecting a growing mutual interest and understanding.
The 'Bongt'nam' project taps into this burgeoning relationship, offering a tangible space where the cultures of both nations can converge and be celebrated. The development of a Vietnam-themed village, if executed authentically and with cultural sensitivity, has the potential to offer visitors an immersive experience of Vietnamese architecture, cuisine, arts, and traditions. Furthermore, the development of linked cooperative tourism products could involve showcasing the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Bonghwa County alongside the Vietnamese theme, creating a more comprehensive and appealing tourism offering.
The success of 'Bongt'nam' will likely depend on several factors, including the authenticity and quality of the Vietnam-themed attractions, the effectiveness of the marketing and branding efforts, and the ability to attract a diverse range of visitors. Engaging with the Vietnamese community in South Korea and fostering partnerships with Vietnamese cultural organizations could be crucial for ensuring the project's cultural relevance and appeal.
Moreover, the project's long-term sustainability will hinge on effective management and operation. This includes ensuring the quality of visitor experiences, maintaining the infrastructure, and adapting to evolving tourist preferences. The development of skilled local workforces in tourism and hospitality will also be essential for the project's success and its contribution to the local economy.
The 'Bongt'nam' initiative represents a bold and innovative approach to regional tourism development. By leveraging a unique historical connection and capitalizing on the growing affinity between South Korea and Vietnam, Bonghwa County is aiming to carve out a distinctive niche in the competitive tourism landscape. If successful, 'Bongt'nam' could serve as a model for other regions seeking to revitalize their economies through creative cultural tourism ventures that celebrate international connections and offer unique experiences to visitors. The project holds the promise of not only boosting the local economy and preserving cultural heritage but also further strengthening the ties between South Korea and Vietnam on a cultural level.
