DAR ES SALAAM – The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) recently hosted a vibrant European Union Debate Contest, showcasing the eloquence and critical thinking skills of young Tanzanian debaters. Careen Ndika, a 21-year-old actuarial science student from UDSM, emerged victorious, earning the coveted title of top speaker.

Ndika’s passionate arguments on the debate topic – whether entrepreneurship offers more sustainable income than traditional employment – resonated with the judges and audience. While acknowledging the merits of entrepreneurship, Ndika championed the stability and social security offered by regular employment, citing research that included interviews with approximately 20 employed individuals. Her victory surprised even herself. “I never expected to see a science student like me debating,” Ndika admitted, highlighting the contest’s ability to demonstrate that scientists are equally concerned with socio-economic issues.

Beyond the debate stage, Ndika harbors aspirations for a career in diplomacy. She believes her analytical skills, honed through her actuarial studies, are invaluable for navigating complex global challenges. “I aspire to proudly represent my country’s principles, beliefs, and culture internationally,” she stated, expressing a desire to learn from other nations and contribute to building stronger international bonds. She is particularly interested in working within embassies or multilateral organizations, focusing on issues like sustainable development, conflict resolution, and cultural exchange.

Ndika’s success was the result of rigorous preparation, including extensive research, practice debates with her team, and gathering firsthand insights from employed individuals. Her dedication and natural talent for public speaking proved a winning combination.

The EU Debate Contest, organized by the European Union Embassy in Tanzania in collaboration with the Polish Embassy, aims to strengthen youth’s communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. This year’s focus on sustainable income proved timely and relevant. The success of the contest underscores its potential to become an annual event, nurturing future generations of Tanzanian leaders.

As the top speaker, Ndika, along with two other outstanding debaters, will travel to Poland this summer on a fully funded trip sponsored by the European Union. This opportunity will allow her to explore Polish culture, connect with students, and gain valuable experience in international relations. “This trip is a representation of the good relationship Tanzania has built with Poland and the EU in general over the years,” Ndika said. She views the trip as a chance to learn from Poland’s diplomatic experience and explore potential collaborations.

Ndika’s journey from science student to aspiring diplomat is an inspiration. She credits her success to hard work, the support of her network, and a commitment to staying informed about current events through various channels, including social media. Her leadership is evident in her roles as chairperson of the UDSM Debate Society, General Secretary of the Actuarial Science Students Association of the UDSM, and President of the Tanzania Actuarial Students Society (TASS).

As she prepares for her trip to Poland, Ndika’s dream of representing Tanzania on the world stage is within reach. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that dedication, passion, and a thirst for knowledge can make even the most ambitious goals attainable. She hopes to inspire other young Tanzanians to pursue their dreams, regardless of their academic background, and to become active global citizens.
