CHEONAN — The city of Cheonan announced on October 30 that it will host the 2nd Cheonan Samgeori Rice Cake Festival on November 8 at the sunken plaza of Cheonan Samgeori Park.
Now in its second year, the festival aims to promote the superior quality of Cheonan rice, preserve traditional rice cake culture, and boost local rice consumption.
Visitors can look forward to a variety of engaging hands-on programs available through on-site registration. Highlights include traditional performance demonstrations such as freshly extruded garaetteok (long cylindrical rice cakes) and tteokme-chigi (pounding glutinous rice to make injeolmi). Participants will also have the opportunity to make their own seasonal treats, including Shine Muscat glutinous rice cakes, manggaetteok (rice cakes wrapped in green briar leaves), and tri-colored sliced rice cakes (samsaek jeolpyeon).
In addition to interactive experiences, the festival grounds will feature vendor booths operated by local rice cake makers, a direct market offering premium local agricultural products, and processed rice items like rice crackers and scorched rice (nurungji).
Families and children can enjoy entertainment such as magic shows, balloon art, and traditional folk games like yunnori and tuho (arrow throwing). Furthermore, a special promotion hall will showcase traditional liquors from four local breweries selected among South Chungcheong Province's "Top 10 Traditional Liquors of 2026," offering tastings for adult attendees.
Cheonan Mayor Jang Ki-soo remarked, "Just as Cheonan Samgeori has historically served as a space for encounters and communication, rice cakes have long been a food of sharing good fortune and fostering harmony. I hope this festival becomes a meaningful occasion for families to experience traditional culture while discovering the exceptional value of Cheonan’s rice and agricultural goods."
