The unprecedented success of the 2025 Daejeon 0-si Festival was driven by unusually cool weather in early August and an increase in citizen participation programs. In the first three days since its opening on August 8, the festival saw an estimated 870,000 visitors. This figure represents an increase of about 100,000 visitors compared to the 779,928 visitors during the same period last year, signaling a major hit from the start.

Notably, there was a significant increase in family-oriented visitors this year. Despite occasional rain, the consistently lower-than-average temperatures created a pleasant environment for people of all ages to enjoy the festival. A representative from the Daejeon City Integrated Situation Room explained, "Unlike previous years when crowds were concentrated at K-pop concerts, this year saw a large decrease in the risk of crowd accidents due to the dispersion of family visitors' departure times and citizens' voluntary compliance with safety rules." This is seen as a positive outcome of the festival's focus on prioritizing safety.

Transformation into a 'Participatory' Festival for the Eyes and Palate

Another key to the festival's success was the significant expansion of 'visitor-participatory' programs. Existing booths, which were previously only for viewing, were transformed into spaces where citizens could touch, taste, and experience things directly, receiving an enthusiastic response. In particular, the promotional booths for Daejeon's sister and friendship cities were very popular, offering events to experience various cultures and sample beverages. Furthermore, 'It's Soo,' the cool tap water from the Waterworks Headquarters, helped people beat the heat, and the Daejeon Fire Department's experience education center became a safety training ground where people could learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

'Kkumdori Matjam Series' Success Drives Local Economic Vitalization

The 'Matjam Series,' a food product line utilizing 'Kkumdori,' Daejeon's representative character, also played a significant role in the festival's success. The Kkumdori walnut cakes, which debuted at the festival, were a huge hit, selling 3,400 boxes in the first three days alone. Kkumdori ramen and makgeolli also saw a positive boost in sales from bundled purchases, contributing to the local economy. Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo stated, "I was worried about the weather, but it turned out to be optimal for enjoying the festival," adding, "We will continue to operate the festival with safety as our top priority for the remaining days."

Meanwhile, the number of complaints received over the three-day period decreased by approximately 26% compared to the previous year. While inquiries mainly concerned program information, noise, and food, this is considered a positive result given the increased scale of the festival. The 2025 Daejeon 0-si Festival has evolved from a simple spectacle into a cultural event where citizens can actively participate and enjoy themselves, establishing itself as a leading summer event for Daejeon. All eyes are on what new records the festival will set in the coming days.
