Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Pop superstar Lady Gaga is set to headline a free concert on Copacabana Beach in May 2025, according to Reuters. The event is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of fans.

The concert is part of Mayor Eduardo Paes' "May of Festivals" initiative, which aims to revitalize the local economy by hosting free performances by international superstars.

Universal Music, Lady Gaga's label, did not respond to requests for comment. Representatives for Lady Gaga were also unavailable for immediate comment as they are currently on vacation.

Madonna previously held a successful free concert on Copacabana Beach in May, attracting an estimated 1.6 million people. The "Like a Prayer" and "Vogue" singer's performance was a major hit.

"It's Lady Gaga's turn next, and the show is expected to take place on May 3rd," a source said. Another source added that the 38-year-old "Bad Romance" and "Poker Face" singer will be headlining the concert, and Irish rock band U2 was also considered.

Earlier this week, Paes announced that he had signed a preliminary agreement to bring an international pop star to Copacabana for a free concert, but did not reveal the artist's name. The final contract is expected to be signed in the coming weeks.

For Madonna's concert, Rio city authorities relied on sponsorship money but also used public funds. At the time, they said the 300 million real ($66.93 million) revenue far exceeded the 10 million real investment.

Fans and the tourism industry are excited about the possibility of another "mega-show" in Rio.

"The mayor has already said that his goal is to bring big shows to Rio," said Alfredo Lopes, president of the Rio hotel workers' union. "Madonna was an absolute success, and Lady Gaga will be a hit too. The tourism market will react very well to this."

Copacabana has previously hosted free concerts by the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, and Lenny Kravitz.
