SEOUL – Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced on May 4, 2026, that it has successfully secured a contract to build a Liquid Natural Gas Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (LNG-FSRU) for an Asian shipowner. The deal is valued at approximately 484.8 billion KRW.
The "Floating LNG Terminal": A Quick Solution for Power Demands
An LNG-FSRU is a specialized vessel often referred to as a "floating LNG terminal." It functions by receiving liquefied natural gas from carriers, storing it, and then regasifying it to be sent onshore via pipelines.
Unlike traditional onshore terminals, which require extensive land use, environmental clearances, and years of construction, an FSRU offers several strategic advantages:
