Los Angeles – Archery is set to make history with an innovative change at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28). As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board approved the Games program and athlete quotas for LA28, emphasizing innovation and gender equality as core values, the compound event has been adopted as an Olympic medal event for archery for the first time ever.

According to World Archery (WA), the LA28 Games will add the compound mixed team event as a new medal event, in addition to the existing Olympic events: recurve individual (men and women), recurve team (men and women), and recurve mixed team. This marks the first time in Olympic archery history that a bow other than the recurve will be a formal medal event.

WA President Uğur Erdener warmly welcomed this decision, stating, "This is a monumental step forward not only for the sport of archery but also for the countless compound archers around the world who have long aspired to Olympic inclusion." He added, "This decision will be an important opportunity to expand the diversity and inclusiveness of archery and provide more exciting spectacles for a wider range of fans."

Archery first appeared on the Olympic stage at the 1900 Paris Olympics and was held for three consecutive Games until the 1920 Antwerp Games. After a long hiatus, it made a spectacular return as a formal sport at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Since its return, only the recurve event has been held at the Olympics, with the addition of men's and women's team events at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and most recently, the introduction of the mixed team event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, bringing the total to five medal events.

Compound archery has distinctly different characteristics from recurve archery. It utilizes a pulley and cam system to reduce the force required to draw the bowstring, allowing for more stable aiming and higher accuracy. Thanks to these features, compound archery is already widely practiced in indoor and field archery and has secured many fans with its dynamic competition style.

The introduction of the compound mixed team event at the LA28 Olympics is expected to significantly promote the appeal of compound archery worldwide and boost the overall popularity of the archery sport. Furthermore, it will open a new arena for challenge towards the dream stage for compound archers who have not had the opportunity to compete in the Olympics before.

Some have raised concerns that the introduction of the compound event might weaken the status of the existing recurve events. However, WA and the IOC emphasize that this decision is a positive change that expands the diversity of the sport of archery and provides more athletes with the opportunity to participate in the Olympics. The two disciplines possess different charms, and it is expected that they will further develop in their respective areas and gain more love from fans through the LA28 Olympics.
