Montevideo, Uruguay – In a poignant display of national pride and historical continuity, Princess Leonor of Asturias served as the standard-bearer during a flag oath ceremony aboard the Juan Sebastián Elcano in Montevideo. The event, held on March 15, 2024, saw 45 Spanish residents in Uruguay pledge their allegiance to the Spanish flag, a tradition deeply rooted in the training cruises of the iconic naval vessel.

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, who emphasized the strong ties between Spain and its diaspora. The presence of key figures such as the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral General Antonio Piñeiro, and the Spanish Ambassador to Uruguay, Javier Salido Ortiz, underscored the significance of the event.

Princess Leonor, dressed in the Navy's gala uniform, adorned with the prestigious Golden Fleece and the Collar of Charles III, carried the flag with grace and solemnity. This marked her first time serving as standard-bearer in such a ceremony, echoing a similar moment for her father, King Felipe VI, who held the same role during his training cruise in 1987 at the very same location.

The Juan Sebastián Elcano, a four-masted topsail schooner, has a long-standing tradition of hosting flag oath ceremonies during its training voyages, allowing Spanish nationals living abroad to reaffirm their connection to their homeland. This year, the Montevideo stop attracted a diverse group of participants, reflecting the vibrant Spanish community in Uruguay, which numbers over 73,000, with a significant portion hailing from Galicia.

The ship's visit to Montevideo, its second stop in Ibero-America after departing from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, provided an opportunity for the Princess and her fellow midshipmen to engage with Uruguayan culture and history. They visited the historic center of Montevideo, attended a reception at the Spanish Embassy, and paid homage to Uruguayan independence hero José Gervasio Artigas with a floral offering.

As the Juan Sebastián Elcano prepares to depart for Chile, its next port of call, the flag oath ceremony in Montevideo stands as a testament to the enduring bonds between Spain and its global community.
