Key West, FL – In a heartwarming turn of events, a 74-year-old Florida man, David Diehl, has been rescued after spending two weeks adrift at sea, the U.S. Coast Guard announced. Diehl was found in good health aboard his 30-foot catamaran, the Stargazer, approximately 30 miles off the coast of Cuba.

The ordeal began on December 4th when Diehl was last seen setting sail from Fort Myers, Florida. His catamaran, however, was swept away by powerful ocean currents, including the Loop Current and the Gulf Stream, which are known for their strong and unpredictable nature.

After an extensive search that spanned several days, a cruise ship spotted the distressed vessel and alerted the U.S. Coast Guard. A rescue team was immediately dispatched, and Diehl was safely brought aboard a Coast Guard cutter.

"Tell your loved ones that David Diehl is back and to stop worrying about him this holiday season," the Coast Guard posted on social media, expressing relief and gratitude for the successful rescue.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of the open sea, even for experienced mariners. The Coast Guard emphasized the importance of filing a float plan and informing loved ones of your intended route and estimated time of return.

“Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return,” the Coast Guard stressed.

This miraculous rescue comes just weeks after another tragic maritime incident in Alaska, where five fishermen lost their lives after their vessel capsized near Point Couverden. Despite an exhaustive search, the missing men were never found.

The contrasting outcomes of these two incidents highlight the unpredictability of the sea and the vital role that search and rescue operations play in safeguarding lives.
