Geoje Shipyards Resume Normal Operations After Record Flooding

- Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries lift employee attendance restrictions following torrential rains.
- Southern coast hit by historic downpours exceeding 800 mm of cumulative rainfall.

The Geoje shipyards operated by Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries have officially transitioned back to normal working schedules after brief attendance restrictions were implemented in the wake of record-breaking torrential rains across the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do. Both companies are currently accelerating recovery efforts for flooded production facilities and infrastructure to ensure full operational normalization.

According to the shipbuilding industry on August 18, 2026, Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries lifted the attendance limitations that were issued for their Geoje business sites the previous day. Consequently, employees returned to regular shifts.

Initially, both shipyards planned to run weekend special shifts for select production workers returning from their early August summer holidays. However, continuous downpours starting over the weekend led to the flooding of certain yard areas and infrastructure, alongside disruptions to local roads and public transportation, prompting the companies to restrict entry for holiday shift workers.

Historic Rainfall and Immediate Response

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), extreme rainfall pounded the southern coastal region starting August 15, with cumulative precipitation in Geoje surpassing 800 mm, marking an unprecedented downpour. Although parts of the dockyards, open-air storage yards, and internal roadways suffered localized flooding, both shipyards confirmed that zero casualties were reported.

Hanwha Ocean deployed available equipment and personnel to prioritize facility restoration alongside its return to regular attendance.

"With weather conditions improving, we have resumed normal attendance," a Hanwha Ocean representative stated. "Emergency drainage and restoration work are underway as parts of our production equipment, substations, and internal roads experienced flooding."
The company added that flooded cafeterias have been substituted with alternative dining arrangements, while laundry facilities remain temporarily suspended until restoration is complete. Officials emphasized that the impact was largely limited to facility inundation with no human injury.

Similarly, Samsung Heavy Industries focused on utilizing heavy-duty drainage pumps to remove rainwater accumulated inside its dry docks while conducting safety inspections across core structures.

"Rainwater flowing into certain docks is being cleared using drainage pumps, and we are closely inspecting facilities for any signs of damage," a Samsung Heavy Industries official noted. "At present, we assess that the impact on overall operations remains at a manageable level."

Industry Outlook and Broader Context of Southern Coast Climate Disruptions

The South Korean shipbuilding sector views the structural impact as relatively limited, anticipating that production schedules will stabilize as soon as emergency repairs conclude. Nevertheless, minor short-term adjustments to project timelines may occur depending on ongoing safety checks and equipment recertification.

The severe weather event highlights mounting climate vulnerabilities for heavy industrial clusters situated along South Korea's southern coast. Geoje, a premier global shipbuilding hub, has increasingly faced environmental challenges linked to sudden extreme precipitation patterns in recent years. Historical data from the region shows that localized summer monsoons and typhoon-season extremes frequently test the structural resilience of heavy coastal manufacturing sites. Both Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries have continually upgraded their automated drainage systems, emergency response protocols, and automated flood-gate barriers to mitigate operational halts.

As recovery efforts wrap up, industry analysts expect both shipyards to make up for lost time through optimized shift planning, ensuring that global vessel delivery timelines for key container ships, LNG carriers, and offshore plants remain largely unaffected.
