The Singapore Navy has officially retired its Challenger-class submarines, marking the end of an era and paving the way for a new generation of underwater vessels. The RSS Conqueror and RSS Chieftain were decommissioned on [Date] at the Changi Naval Base.   

Acquired from the Swedish Navy in the 1990s, the Challenger-class submarines played a pivotal role in developing the Singapore Navy's submarine capabilities. The submarines have been involved in numerous maritime operations, contributing to the protection of Singapore's maritime interests and territorial integrity. They have also played a significant role in enhancing Singapore's defense relationships through bilateral and multilateral exercises.   

"The Challenger-class submarine and her crews have contributed immensely to Singapore’s maritime security through countless operations," said the Singapore Ministry of Defence in a statement. "They have also enhanced Singapore’s defence relations through bilateral and multilateral exercises."   

Rear Admiral Sean Wat, Chief of Navy, commended the Challenger-class submarines and their crews at the decommissioning ceremony. "The achievements of the Challenger-class submarines are a testament to the unwavering determination and courage of the pioneers of the Singapore Navy who have grown our submarine force into a world-class capability," he said.   

"We started submarine operations 29 years ago with the valuable support of the Swedish Navy on the Challenger-class submarines, overcoming numerous challenges along the way," Rear Admiral Wat added. "Our pioneer submarines have pushed the boundaries of submarine operations with determination and perseverance, allowing us to confidently operate today’s advanced platforms."   

Alongside the decommissioning ceremony, Rear Admiral Wat also officiated the opening of a new Submarine Training School (STS), named after the RSS Challenger. The STS is a one-stop training facility designed to enhance the realism, effectiveness, and efficiency of training through the use of technology. The STS is also equipped with a full-mission simulator that enables safe and efficient individual and team training.   

The retirement of the Challenger-class submarines marks a significant milestone for the Singapore Navy as it continues to modernize its fleet and enhance its capabilities to meet the evolving maritime security challenges in the region.
