Gyeongbuk's East Coast, Embracing King Munmu’s Patriotic Spirit, Opens a New Horizon for Maritime History and Cultural Tourism

Gyeongsangbuk-do announced that it will host the "2026 King Munmu Festival" for two days from October 3 to 4 at the King Munmu Maritime History Museum in Gyeongju.

Organized by the Gyeongju Cultural Foundation, this event was designed to honor the patriotic spirit and maritime pioneering spirit of King Munmu, who achieved the unification of the Three Kingdoms under Silla and sought to protect the country by becoming a dragon of the East Sea.

The King Munmu Maritime History Museum officially opened in May 2026. Taking the opening of the history museum as an opportunity, Gyeongsangbuk-do has expanded content combining history, culture, and hands-on experiences, while preparing cultural events to widely promote the spirit of King Munmu.

Jazz and traditional Korean music (Gugak) performances will take place in the front yard of the venue. Under the subtitle "From the Past to the Future," special lectures will be held to learn about and empathize with the historical value of King Munmu. Supplementary programs that future generations, including children and adolescents, can enjoy together will also be operated.

Through this event, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to foster the Gyeongbuk East Coast region as a hub for maritime historical tourism. It anticipates that increased visitor numbers and the revitalization of local commercial districts will also contribute to the local economy.

Nam Geon, Director-General of the Oceans and Fisheries Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "King Munmu’s maritime pioneering spirit is an important spiritual asset as we seek future growth engines through the sea today. I hope this event will re-illuminate the value of Gyeongsaungbuk-do’s East Coast and serve as a meaningful occasion that inspires many people."
