New Mexico National Guard Deploys to Djibouti… Committed to Successful Mission Amidst Family Concerns

Albuquerque, New Mexico – Four hundred New Mexico National Guard soldiers are being deployed to Djibouti, Africa, this year. On Tuesday afternoon, half of these soldiers held send-off ceremonies in Albuquerque, while the other half did so in Las Cruces. This deployment is set to be the largest overseas deployment in the history of the New Mexico National Guard since its peacekeeping mission in Egypt in 2012.

"First Deployment, First Step Towards a Dream"

PFC Christopher Nunez, who is experiencing his first overseas deployment, shared his feelings, stating, "This deployment means a lot to me. My goal is simply to complete my mission and return safely." His mother expressed her poignant feelings, saying, "I'm happy because it's been his dream to be a soldier since he was young, but at the same time, I'm worried. I will pray for my son every day."

Multinational Coalition Operation, Contributing to African Security

In addition to New Mexico, this deployment to Djibouti includes approximately 1,100 troops in total, encompassing National Guard units from Oregon, Washington, and Louisiana. They will be stationed at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti and will support security operations in the African region. Lt. Col. Sergio Hands explained, "The African region is important as our national interests are at stake there. Based in Djibouti, we will be distributed across three countries and six outposts, supporting all operations under the command of the Africa Command."

Camp Lemonnier is a key U.S. military base located in the Horn of Africa, playing a crucial role in maintaining security and stability across the African continent. It primarily conducts counter-terrorism operations, maritime security operations, and humanitarian aid activities within the region, serving as one of the main strongholds for the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). Troops stationed here perform reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence gathering, in addition to resolving instability in East Africa and responding to potential threats.

One Year of Preparation, Families' Dedication

The deploying soldiers spent the past year undergoing realistic training while also diligently preparing at home. Sgt. Juan Peralta stated, "We helped the soldiers get mentally ready, and at home, I did DIY projects to make sure my family was safe and everything was okay." His wife, who attended the send-off ceremony, expressed her deep trust in her husband, saying, "There will be times when I can't reach my husband, but I'm truly proud of him. I know he did his best for this mission."

This deployment will be an opportunity for personal growth and challenge for the New Mexico National Guard soldiers, as well as a crucial mission contributing to U.S. national security. Amidst the concerns and support of their families, we wish for their safe completion of the mission and their return home.
