US Vice President Vows to Complete Alaska LNG Project Regardless of South Korean Political Shifts

WASHINGTON / ANCHORAGE — U.S. Vice President JD Vance has reaffirmed the Trump administration's unwavering commitment to the multi-billion-dollar Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) development project. Speaking directly on the current political dynamics surrounding South Korea's potential investment, he emphasized that Washington will see the project through to completion with either current or future administrations.

In an interview with local broadcaster Alaska News Source on October 6 (local time), Vance addressed the complexities surrounding foreign investment.

"Frankly, I think there are some political dynamics in South Korea," Vance said.

However, he immediately underscored the administration's resolve: "Whether it’s with South Korea’s current government, the next government, or frankly, if we have to work with Japan or other nations, we are going to get this project done."

Bridging the Diplomatic Gap

Vance's remarks appear to acknowledge the subtle yet notable temperature gap between Washington and Seoul. While the South Korean government has maintained a cautious stance—stating that the LNG project is still being reviewed on strict commercial terms—Vance brushed off these domestic political headwinds as minor hurdles.

Highlighting the global appetite for reliable energy, Vance noted that consumers are desperate for natural gas produced in Alaska. He argued that Alaskan gas is "cheaper, of higher quality, and far more reliable than gas coming from some trivial autocratic regimes."

Reiterating strong domestic demand and the Trump administration's ironclad political will, Vance firmly stated, "We are going to make this happen."

Financing and Political Stakes

The Vice President made these remarks while campaigning in Fairbanks, Alaska, in support of Republican Senator Dan Sullivan’s reelection bid.

At the event, Senator Sullivan claimed that funding for the massive LNG venture has already been secured. "There are still a lot of discussions ongoing regarding negotiations and the [business] structure, but that [securing funds] is the biggest difference" compared to past attempts, Sullivan said.

The project has recently turned into a diplomatic flashpoint. Last month, President Donald Trump announced a massive $200 billion South Korean energy investment package in the U.S., specifying that $50 billion would be allocated toward the Alaska LNG project.

However, Seoul quickly pushed back, clarifying that no final investment decisions have been finalized. In response, President Trump ratcheted up pressure, warning that South Korea could face steep economic costs if it declines to participate in the venture.

The high-stakes dispute unfolds against a tense domestic backdrop in Alaska. Traditionally a Republican stronghold, recent polling shows Democratic candidate Mary Peltola leading incumbent Senator Sullivan, injecting profound uncertainty into the upcoming Senate race and amplifying the political pressure surrounding the LNG pipeline's future.
