Samsung Heavy Industries Secures Orders for 20 LNG Carriers

Samsung Heavy Industries has once again proven its leading competitiveness in the LNG carrier sector by achieving orders for 20 LNG carriers this year.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 5th that it recently secured an order for two LNG carriers from an Asian shipowner, worth 6722 billion KRW (approximately $4.9 billion). These vessels are scheduled to be delivered by May 2029.

According to Samsung Heavy Industries, the background behind its successful mass-order of LNG carriers lies in No. 3 Dock at the Geoje Shipyard. Measuring 640 meters in length and 97.5 meters in width, No. 3 Dock is capable of simultaneously constructing four large LNG carriers, enabling a stable response to delivery deadlines even amidst massive orders. In addition, evaluation shows that production efficiency and quality competitiveness are rising together through the establishment of a "3X"-based smart shipyard encompassing digital, AI, and robotic transitions.

Back in July, Samsung Heavy Industries announced plans to invest 10 trillion KRW in the Geoje business site to establish a cutting-edge, high-value-added vessel and offshore infrastructure construction base. As large-scale investments get into full swing, the speed of the company’s smart shipyard construction is expected to accelerate further.

Samsung Heavy Industries’ commercial shipping order performance for this year stands at 8 billion USD, achieving 140% of its annual order target of 5.7 billion USD. By vessel type, the total consists of 46 ships, including 20 flagship LNG carriers (including one LNG-FSRU), 2 ethane carriers, 6 gas carriers, 4 container carriers, and 14 crude oil carriers. Including the offshore sector worth 4.4 billion USD—such as two FLNG units—the total reaches 48 ships and 12.4 billion USD, achieving 89% of its annual order target of 13.9 billion USD.

An official from Samsung Heavy Industries stated, “Samsung Heavy Industries is playing a core role in the global LNG value chain, including LNG carriers and FLNGs,” and added, “We will continue to lead the market with differentiated technology and construction competitiveness.”
