Gyeongnam Cambodian Community Holds Traditional ‘Pchum Ben’ Festival in Goseong

Cambodian workers and immigrants residing in Gyeongnam gathered in Goseong to celebrate their homeland's traditional holiday together.

The Changwon Foreign Workers Support Center announced on the 6th that the Cambodian traditional holiday event, "Pchum Ben," was held at Goseong Georyu Neighborhood Park in Goseong-gun.

Hosted by the Cambodian communities in the Changwon, Goseong, Tongyeong, and Geoje regions, the event brought together around 100 Cambodian workers and immigrants from the Gyeongnam area.

Pchum Ben is Cambodia's representative holiday dedicated to honoring the spirits of ancestors and praying for the well-being of families. Because of the custom of visiting temples to offer food and commemorate ancestors, it is often compared to Korea's Chuseok.

During the event, a dharma talk by Sopheak, head monk of the Gumi Cambodian community, and an alms-giving ceremony were held to pray for the participants' health and peace in their Korean lives. This was followed by various programs, such as traditional Cambodian dances and tug-of-war, fostering friendship and unity.

Representatives of the Cambodian community "Samakum Khmer Tongyeong" shared, "It was a meaningful time to soothe our homesickness while enjoying our homeland's traditional culture together, and we are grateful to the Changwon Foreign Workers Support Center for supporting the event."

Center Director Jin Jong-sang stated, "We will spare no continuous interest and support for community activities by country so that foreign workers, who work hard for the development of Changwon's defense industry and Gyeongnam's aerospace and shipbuilding industries, can gather and enjoy themselves."
