Trump Basks in Nobel Peace Prize Speculation, Claiming Tariffs and Deals Averted Global Conflicts

WASHINGTON — With the announcement of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize just two days away, U.S. President Donald Trump has once again voiced his expectation for the honor, arguing that he is uniquely qualified to receive it.

Speaking at the White House on Tuesday (local time), Trump remarked, "I don't know how they (the Nobel Committee) will decide. They have a reputation for not giving awards to people like me."

He added, "Whether I receive the award or not, I have accomplished far more. If they don't give it to me, it will be a great discredit to them."

Trump asserted that he has resolved eight conflicts, saved millions of lives, and rescued hostages, stating, "I have done things that no one else has done. I am not boasting; I am simply stating the facts."

He further claimed that by preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, "I may have averted the complete destruction of the world."

Drawing comparisons to his predecessor, Trump brought up former President Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize win. "Obama got the award without doing anything," Trump said. "He still doesn't know why he got it."

Trump also mentioned that last year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, had offered him her medal. According to Trump, Machado told him, "No one deserves this award more than President Trump."

In addition to diplomatic and rescue efforts, Trump credited his economic policies with preserving global stability. "By using tariff authorities and various other tools as leverage against specific countries, I prevented many wars from breaking out," he claimed, pointing to his trade policies as a major contribution to peace.

Trump has previously asserted that during an armed conflict between India and Pakistan in May of last year, he successfully pressured both nations into a ceasefire by threatening to impose a steep 250% tariff.
