Latin America is grappling with severe environmental, agricultural, and economic crises driven by the El Niño phenomenon, which has caused unprecedented droughts and water shortages across the region. In response to worsening conditions, nations such as Honduras, El Salvador, and Panama have enacted drastic emergency measures, while global supply chains face mounting disruptions.

According to recent reports by AFP and local media, Panama officially declared a national state of emergency due to severe droughts brought on by El Niño. Interior Minister Dinosca Montalvo stated that this emergency declaration will enable authorities to proactively address the profound impacts of the climate anomaly.

The crisis has directly crippled the Panama Canal, a critical artery for global maritime logistics. The canal relies heavily on freshwater from artificial reservoirs like Gatun Lake for its lock system. However, a drastic drop in rainfall has severely depleted these water resources. Consequently, the Panama Canal Authority announced reduced operations starting next month. To secure priority passage through the bottleneck, bidding prices for express transit slots have shattered historical records. Bloomberg reported that South Korea’s SK Gas recently agreed to pay an all-time high of 5.3 million dollars (approximately 7.3 billion won) for an expedited transit fee—a staggering surge compared to the average of 55,000 dollars (about 76 million won) recorded late last year and early this year.

Neighboring countries are facing similarly dire conditions. El Salvador issued a nationwide "red alert"—the highest level of disaster response—due to the devastating agricultural and meteorological droughts. With daily record-high temperatures broken repeatedly this August, El Salvador experienced a sharp decline in rainfall during what is typically a wet season, resulting in damage to roughly 20 percent of its staple crop production. Authorities note that the country has endured droughts during its rainy season for three consecutive years.

Earlier, Honduras issued drought warnings across 234 of its 298 municipalities—accounting for nearly 80 percent of the country—and declared red alerts in 75 severely affected regions. The impacts are rippling deep into South America as well. Peru recently declared a state of emergency in one-third of its cities due to a combination of droughts and heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Colombia, which heavily relies on hydropower, is suffering from severe power shortages as major reservoirs dry up, compounded by massive wildfires fueled by dry weather conditions.

Beyond immediate weather anomalies, experts warn that the economic, environmental, and food security crisis in Latin America will likely persist for a long time. El Niño events typically last for over a year, and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently forecasted a greater than 90 percent probability that this particularly strong El Niño will persist through the end of next year, leaving affected nations facing prolonged hardship.
