- Province checks foreigners' departure maturity insurance and return cost insurance... pushing for seizure and collection of insurance claims

Chungcheongnam-do announced on the 8th that it will check exclusive insurance policies subscribed to by foreign workers and proceed with the seizure and collection of insurance claims in order to reduce local tax arrears among foreigners.

The carried-over local tax arrears of foreigners in the province have continued to increase, rising from 2.8 billion won in 2024 to 2.9 billion won in 2025, and 31 billion won in 2026. By tax item, automobile tax accounted for 1.7 billion won, local education tax for 600 million won, and local income tax for 500 million won.

In response, the province will check whether foreign workers are enrolled in departure maturity insurance and return cost insurance, and will push for the seizure and collection of these insurance claims.

For delinquent taxpayers whose enrollment in exclusive insurance is confirmed, the province will issue a prior notice of seizure and encourage voluntary payment. If they fail to pay, the insurance claims will be seized in accordance with relevant laws and collected when insurance payment grounds arise, such as departure from the country.

An official from the province stated, "Since it is difficult to collect arrears from foreign taxpayers due to departure or changes in residence, it is necessary to track down assets held by delinquents domestically and pursue disposition of arrears. Through this exclusive insurance inquiry and arrears disposition, we will minimize foreigners' tax arrears and foster an atmosphere of faithful tax payment."
