Democrats Lead GOP by 10 Points Ahead of Midterms as Trump’s Approval Hits Record Low

WASHINGTON — With the pivotal November 3 midterm elections just days away, the Democratic Party has surged to a commanding 10-percentage-point lead over the Republicans, according to a comprehensive new CNN poll conducted in partnership with SSRS. The survey paints a turbulent picture for the GOP, which analysts say is being heavily weighed down by historically low public approval ratings for President Donald Trump, fueled by persistent public frustration over inflation and the soaring cost of living.

According to the poll, released Wednesday, when registered voters were asked which party’s candidate they intend to support in their local congressional districts, 49% chose the Democrats, compared to 39% for the Republicans. This 10-point margin marks the widest gap recorded by CNN in congressional preference polling since just before the 2020 presidential election, signaling a potential seismic shift in political momentum as the legislative balance of power hangs in the balance.

A Broad Demographic Shift and Economic Discontent

The survey highlights deep-seated vulnerabilities for the ruling party across nearly every major demographic sector. Democrats have successfully consolidated support among key voting blocs, leading the GOP by 70 percentage points among Black voters, 40 points among Hispanic voters, and 21 points among women. Furthermore, Democrats hold a substantial 15-point advantage among independent voters—a crucial group that often decides close congressional contests.

Crucially, the economy—traditionally a cornerstone of conservative political campaigns—has become a major liability for the administration. Among voters who identified the economy as their most pressing concern, 46% backed Democratic candidates, while only 37% threw their support behind Republicans.

Public sentiment regarding President Trump’s executive performance has plummeted to unprecedented depths. The poll reveals that Trump’s overall job approval rating has dropped to 32%, hitting an all-time low in CNN polling history. Discontent is particularly stark regarding his administration's financial management: only 27% of respondents approved of his economic policies, while a meager 23% expressed confidence in his handling of inflation. Even within the Republican base, cracks are showing, with the president’s approval among his own party members slipping to 74%—a notable decline from 88% in February of last year.

Early Voting Momentum and a Referendum on the White House

The urgency and intensity of the electorate are already translating into early ballot boxes. Roughly 13% of survey respondents reported that they have already cast their ballots, and among this early-voting cohort, an overwhelming 70% indicated they voted for Democratic candidates.

Political analysts note that the midterms are rapidly transforming into an absolute referendum on the executive branch. The CNN survey found that roughly 6 in 10 voters view their participation in this election primarily as a direct message regarding President Trump’s governance.

Despite the grim polling figures nationally, political strategists urge caution regarding how these numbers will translate into actual seat distributions. Many of the key congressional battleground districts up for grabs this November are located in regions where Trump secured decisive victories during the previous presidential election. Whether the national enthusiasm and broad-based Democratic momentum can pierce these conservative strongholds remains one of the ultimate questions of election night.

The CNN/SSRS poll was conducted between October 15 and 18, surveying a random national sample of 1,701 American adults, which included 1,206 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.9 percentage points for the full sample of adults and plus or minus 3.3 percentage points among registered voters.
